I am sure Subaru knows that. I guess it wasn't enough |
I don’t know about Toyota being way ahead. They have been very slow on the EV front, and after several quarters of declining US sales, they just announced a big rethinking of their strategy, acknowledging that they are way behind the competition on EVs and in need of a reboot. One of the really interesting things about the surge of EVs is how it is upending the long-standing car brand rankings/ expectations/ common wisdom. Interesting to see what the landscape looks like 10 years from now. I am a longtime Lexus buyer, who is about to buy my first non-Lexus since grad school, because they don’t have an EV to offer, and can’t say when one might actually be available. |
| Out of curiosity, what do people recommend for a mid-price safe and reliable EV or hybrid sedan? |
The hyundai ioniq or kia ev6. Could also consider the ford mach-e or the VW ID4. Wait on all of those may be long? Also there are changes to the EV purchase tax credit so some may be gaining or losing tax credits. |
| We have owned two Subarus and just bought another Forester. It is probably the last gas-powered vehicle we will purchase. They have been safe and reliable cars for the most part but underpowered plus our local dealership with recently awful customer service makes it unlikely we will choose the brand again. EVs are the future. |
| I currently own my first and last Subaru. My Forester burns oil and a few weeks ago I experienced total clutch failure with about 30 seconds warning on a highway (and I count my lucky stars I was able to get off the road). Bought it because it was one of the few models with manual. NEVER again. |
What year was this Forester? |
You know who is ahead of Toyota in EV/PHEVs, based on my experience with both? Ford. |
I’ve never heard of a manual failing like that. But the CVT’s fail regularly |
| Fine with me. Their cars are hideous. |
| I really liked the Ascent but I have long term reliability concerns and just couldn’t do it. I’m not sure why they are so wedded to the CVT. |
| Honda and Subaru both lag in the hybrid segment |
| Love our Subaru and everything about it, but our next car will be EV. |
| I doubt Subaru will exit. The electrification of the majority of US cars will take decades. We don’t have enough raw materials (lithium etc) to really pull it off. |
| I am very fond of my 2021 Ascent. It runs really well and it's easily the safest car I have ever owned. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is pretty crappy. Since I'm mostly a city/town driver, I only get 21-22 mpg. I wouldn't mind buying another Subaru some time, but I don't think I really need the 3 rows anymore so I can see myself downsizing. Having an EV option would be a huge selling point. |
