Boy that sure seems that UVA CS is subpar like you said PP…wait? |

VT CpE grad here - Absolutely LOVE VT, one child going there now. With that said, you can do CS anywhere. CS is more about what you do outside of the classroom. It's easy to gain experience working on Open Source projects, thus creating your own portfolio.
Job searching (recruiting), food, culture/atmosphere, and campus at VT are outstanding. Students LOVE it there. But, as a high school senior, your DC needs to find the place that they love. If it's WM or UVA or GMU all are fine. Find your happy place! |
Someone actually posted the top employers for each a few months ago. The lists are almost identical. Kind of interesting how little these lists differ (only UVA has Google and only VT has Microsoft)... UVA - Capital One, Deloitte, EY, Google, Amazon VT - Capitol One, Booz Allen, Deloitte, Microsoft, IBM W&M - Capital One, Booz Allen, Deloitte, EY, IBM JMU - Capital One, Booz Allen, Deloitte, EY, Accenture GMU - Booz Allen, Northrop, Deloitte, Capital One, Amazon You still see Capital One and Booz... VCU - VCU Health, Capital One, Dominion Energy, HCA Health, Altria CNU - Ferguson, Newport News Schools, Newport News Shipbuilding, US Army, Capital One ODU - US Navy, Sentara, Newport News Shipbuilding, Anthem, Booz Allen |
What an embarrassing self-own. |
So your source is "random comment on anonymous forum"? Good, good. |

Really doesn't matter where he/she goes for CS, I'd say UVA/VT have better campus recruiting but W&M won't be too far behind. Like others said, it's important to go to the school where the kid will be happy. All three of these schools have very different cultures so do a campus visit and see what they like best.

From an observer's perspective, the person that doesn't seem too bright is not the person to whom you are addressing this post. |
| I go to W&M - every CS major I know has internships or jobs lined up at top firms. Yes the school is traditionally known for liberal arts but it still has a really strong CS program they're pouring a lot of funding into, I think it's a strong enough school that you can ignore what it "specializes in" if you get in. |
| PP edit- maybe not the tippity top firms that take the ivy kids obviously but Capitol One, Morgan Stanley etc |
+100 My kid is in liberal arts at VT, but I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said! |
All false. Go and tour yourself and learn. |

OMG. You can’t be serious. It’s #28. I can’t even believe you fell for this. https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/computer-science-rankings |
Last time I checked STEM was more than CS. Why do all these people only focus on CS? Chemistry, biology, bio-engineering, mathematics, geology etc. C'mon people STEM is a wide group of disciplines and UVA is doing better but not anywhere it should be. |
What? You (or the PPP) linked something stating that UVA is “no 1” for computer science. Not even close. The UVA boosterism is just so over the top. |
