Most/least favorite holiday and why?

Like most: Halloween
No giftgiving other than bags of candy, no travel, does not last a month. Thanksgiving is my second favorite because it's all in one day with one meal... downsides are potential for annoying travel and relatives

Like least: NYE
I am DONE celebrating at this point after at least a month of Hanukkah and Christmas gift-buying, cards, parties, etc. It's too cold for outdoors to be fun. I'd prefer to go somewhere warm and quiet for NYE, but it's so expensive.

4th of July and Chinese New Year are my favorites. I married into a Chinese-American family so I have zero expectations imposed on me for the holiday but get to help contribute to all of the fun. 4th of July has no intense family traditions and I get to swim. The hardest thing I do all day is cut up a watermelon.

Halloween through NYE? No. One of my parents died on Christmas Day many years ago and Thanksgiving has always been a fraught holiday in my extended family. The sun starts setting earlier and that’s my cue to put on a fake happy face and go through the motions for 2 months.

Halloween is my favorite! My kids are little so they love costumes and I find it so adorable. We love all the events earlier in the month leading up to it too, they feel a little more special than just regular outings. Before kids I was super into Halloween too, making a creative costume myself and of course parties and drinking, ha. I like how Halloween is in our neighborhood, it has a real community feeling.

I don't love Thanksgiving or Xmas bc we don't have a big extended family or real traditions yet. I feel a little left out compared to how it feels like these holidays should be (and yes I realize there is no "should" and it's all up to us).

Most: Halloween (fun, silly, signals the end of summer, candy, etc)

Least: New Years Eve. Why is it even a big deal? And who the hell wants to stay up until midnight, drinking? I want to be in bed by 9pm thanks.

I pretty much hate everything November-January.

I just wish Thanksgiving food wasn't so terrible. I love the apps and the pies. The main meal? Blergh.

Anonymous wrote:Least favorite is 4th of July. Just seems wrong to celebrate independence as a nation when it was really only independence for white people. Black peoples were still kept as slaves. I struggle with this every year. My favorite is Christmas, the joy of Santa for my kid, Christmas Eve church service, seeing the lights, all of it.

So you are cool with celebrating Christianity which has and continues to have centuries of death, oppression, exploitation, rape and thievery? Ok.

I have only eaten sides and desserts at Thanksgiving for 30+ years.

I love Halloween because I am a practicing Witch. I celebrate Samhain.

I'm not sure I have a "least favorite" holiday. I love all of them! Even cheesey Valentine's Day. Life can be tough sometimes. Having festivals makes things feel brighter and lighter.

I like Christmas best and Easter least, and I’m Catholic. Christmas is such a warm and cozy time, and we focus on the birth of Christ and everything feels meaningful. It’s a quiet time to reflect on what matters.

I also love what Easter is really about - the resurrection of Christ, but the holiday as we celebrate it here as a culture is dreadful. Candy binges and that creepy Easter bunny.

that’s a separate holiday and irrelevant.

umm it’s to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Pretty sure Jesus was good people. Doesn’t mean I believe or support everything in the Bible or the way others interpret it.

I frankly admit that I love pretty much all holidays. But my family is very close and very chill so excuses to get together and cook are generally positive. That being said, I think Christmas might be my favourite, because we the absolute most cooking for it, and I love giving and getting presents. Thanksgiving is probably my least favourite because as an immigrant I don't find it hugely meaningful and the timing is dreadful. Thursday is such a weird day to have off; it's right before advent; black Friday is so awful.

Least: Hanukkah—too many nights.
Most: New Year’s Day—a new beginning.

It's a term of art question - What's your most vs least favorite?

Rather than asking:

What is your favorite holiday, and which do you hate the most?

You could just say "what is your favorite and least favorite holiday?"
