Is it possible to skip taking geometry for 8th grader?

Anonymous
OP, they will send out a notice to do math classes over the summer prior to the summer or you can do a class at some of the privates. Its very hard to master everything in 6 weeks so I wouldn't recommend it. We have done summer private classes as prep and it wasn't enough for just 6 weeks for full mastery.

You also need it for physics in HS

I think it and physics use a different part of the brain than algebra or calculus. That’s why top students in Wash Dac public schools are able to take it and algebra the same year in middle school. It’s quite different, uses application equations and needs a spatial relations brain to do accurately and quickly.

Really? Most of the math people I know, myself included, loathed geometry. I adored algebra, trig, calc, but geometry? Barf.

That said, I still don’t think it’s wise to skip it.

No.

And trig is part of geometry. In fact most of upper level geometry you’d cover after elementary school.

OP, it is possible for your child to skip all of the classes offered at your local public school. Simply sign her up for the GED test.

If so what is the requirement? (Map is currently at 99% tile at 7 and 8th grade levels.)

only if you're at one of the wealthier Potomac schools

Wealthy Potomac parent who never gets out of their bubble can help OP.

(But, no, you'd have to take it over the summer and its really not a good idea given the short time for the class).

OP’s child is in 8th grade and taking the 8thgrade Geometry now, if I understand her post. No, a student cannot leave geometry class after the 1st quarter and take algebra 2 in HS, unless you have support from your math teacher and the principal.
Talk to your child’s math teacher first.
Or by a book from AOPS and challenge your child at home with questions from their Geometry book. If your child can resolve most of the problem from the book, congratulations to you and your child. Contact TPMS magnet for advise.

They're also very short and thus concentrated, and can be hard to follow for someone with no prior experience, and not include the full curriculum others get during the year.

So if you take one to get ahead in a subject that builds on itself, year after year, be careful - you will not get the same instruction as in the full year course, and might run into difficulties in the next year's class.

Can a rising 8th grader register for MCPS's summer (high) school courses including honors geometry? On the summer school course website it says it is for 9-12 graders. Thanks.

In the past, the only HS course 8th graders could take before starting HS was health. Not sure if that’s still the case.

Very helpful! How do we find out if an outside-MCPS course contents is stated approved for Honors Geometry or not? Thanks.

I would start by asking whoever taught the outside class, because they would have had to go through the approval process.

If they completed algebra, I think yes.

STOP LYING. There have been several threads about this just this year already. It's not true. Kids can place into higher math classes at many schools across the county, but it's at the discretion of their math coordinator, and some of them, INCLUDING at wealthy schools, are not in favor of acceleration, and do their best to block the kids from "qualifying".

No you can’t skip geometry. Also you might be interested to know that there are kids with 99% scores many grades up (i.e. 290+ in middle school) In the magnets they move those kids to a path to take calculus in 10th grade.

TJ students taking AP physics have to have taken Calculus BC or be doing it at the same time, suggesting physics uses the same part of the brain.
