Fighting at Jackson Reed

Hmmm like child like parent I guess. Racist apples don't fall far from the racist tree.

Hmm. .. if you actually had kids at J-R you would know this description isn't racist; it's factual. There are specific groups of students who regularly brawl with each other and yes, some of them are girls. The admin bends over backwards not to punish those groups, either, for "equity" reasons. So the fighting continues.

Hot Cheeto girls go to other high schools. My kid referred to these girls last year. I liken it to goth, burnouts, jocks, chollas, etc.. which were all subcultures in my high school.

So is it better or worse with the new principal?

You don’t need to have a kid at J-R to recognize racist epitaphs - https://www.unpublishedzine.com/personal-essay/its-not-that-deep-the-hot-cheetos-girl-and-modern-stereotypes-of-blackhispanic-women

I went to a large, diverse urban public high school and 1) there were not-infrequent fights and 2) kids like me and my friends were never involved in them. I mean, of course I wouldn’t love to hear that my kids were witnessing altercations at school. But it wouldn’t seem shocking or even indicative that my kid is getting a bad education.

Agree that PP is racist but it’s “epithets,” not “epitaphs.”

It’s not so much racist as a perjorative classification. Same as “Karens.” Either way, it’s rude.

But a bigger question is why are people fighting, and why does it tend to be certain types of girls, assuming that observation is correct? Is the perception that the identity of the fighters results in lack of action well-founded? If so, what could acty Be done to improve the situation? Clearly, neither fighting nor tolerance of fighting is good for anyone.

am now curious as to why "hot cheeto girl" would be deemed racist but "valley girl" or "vsco girl" would not. The urban dictionary describes it as a look---a girl with big hoop earrings, fake eyelashes and long acryllic nails who has a nicotine addiction and bad boy boyfriend. Where I grew up, there were certainly a lot of white girls who fit that description too.

It’s about stylistic choices, not immutable characteristics, so I don’t consider it ‘racist’ either. People of all ages make questionable fashion choices, often in concert with groups they identify with. I think worlds of affluent women’s having blond ponytails is sort of silly too.

Agree.

2300 students and growing.

Way to destroy DC's best high school.

The JR building was designed for around 1500 students. With an appropriate building 2300 wouldn't be a problem.

There are some high schools in the VA and MoCo suburbs with close to 3000 students that don't feel over crowded and aren't plagued by fights, e.g. Washington-Liberty in Arlington.

These numbers are factually inaccurate. The building is built for about 1800. The school has about 2100-2200 kids right now. And there are trailers being put in right now to add a handful of classrooms.

All this to say that it is overcrowded for sure but--as with all things DCUM--take everything with a giant grain of salt.
