West coast schools

I disagree with those who say to skip visits to UC schools. If your child is genuinely interested, they should go to at least one to get a sense of the large size of these schools. Furthermore, we visited multiple UC schools on a west coast visit that included USC and several privates. There's definitely a difference and visiting the UC schools may help your child in paring down their list if they either love/don't what they see when comparing UCs to others.

This is me above.....the UC schools have a different application (not Common App) with 4 essays. It's nice you can apply to many at once, however, if you visit UCs and your child doesn't like schools of that size...taking UC off the application list has a real, tangible impact.

That’s a good point. Deciding against the UCs means elimination of a heavyweight application.

They’ve built some enormous (and very nice) new dorms. This is very recent, all within the past few years. There is even a pet-friendly dorm (which I personally think is bonkers but it shows how far they’ve gone to attract residents). The area near the school is now super lively. Some of the new dorms are right near the football stadium.

Anyhow I would take a look. It’s got a great sports culture. Like all the California schools, it’s got a very diverse student body. Your kid could find a good home.

PP here. I just did a quick search because I remembered some press coverage about this. There might be better info but I found this very “local evening news” clip and thought I’d share.

Interesting! (Though it said "nearly half" live "on or near" campus.)

I agree. Somewhere along the line it was described as a cultish retreat in the hills of Malibu. Not like that at all.

I feel like people talk about it as wealthy and conservative more than religious.

That’s because some of the dorms are technically off campus, I think.
