Pepperdine is not nearly as religious as DCUM makes it out to be. It is a little weird how DCUM describes it.

I agree. Somewhere along the line it was described as a cultish retreat in the hills of Malibu. Not like that at all.

Jumping into ask the CA experts. My DD is average student in an IB school. Decent extra curriculum (sports, clubs) and has a part-time job.
She’s applying to SDSU. Wants a 15k plus student college w/ football. What other publics should we look at? We also have family in So. CA but they’re out of the loop on schools. Interests in social justice and global affairs.

Tuition low, dorms breathtakingly high

Does this mean the cost of housing high?

What’s the draw to Santa Clara?

Silicon Valley internships and jobs. Gorgeous campus. Great Jesuit education.

I’d look at SJSU and Sacramento State if she wants big D1. There are some good-sized D2 schools too which I can suggest if that’s of interest.

Thanks. How much of a commuter feel do these schools have?

Sorry, yes for both. She was looking at both a while back but it looked like they are very much commuter. SDSU makes OOS kids live on campus first two year which is great.

Sac State has made enormous efforts in the past few years to shed the “commuter school” reputation. The last I heard, approximately half their students live in campus housing. They’ve built some enormous (and very nice) new dorms. This is very recent, all within the past few years. There is even a pet-friendly dorm (which I personally think is bonkers but it shows how far they’ve gone to attract residents). The area near the school is now super lively. Some of the new dorms are right near the football stadium.

Anyhow I would take a look. It’s got a great sports culture. Like all the California schools, it’s got a very diverse student body. Your kid could find a good home.

PP here. I just did a quick search because I remembered some press coverage about this. There might be better info but I found this very “local evening news” clip and thought I’d share.
