Who told you that??

Personal essay is required and you better have a great personal essay when its acceptance rate is under 10%

They do not require anything more than the Common App Essay. No school-specific essay. Makes applying easy. Weird.

Why do you want to make it difficult?? Weird.

Kids already have done all the real work for 4 years, all the extracurricular activities, and then tests & the main essay.

The school would have plenty of info already whether an applicant is right fit.

Throwing in an extra 'why our school' wouldn't even make much difference.

Kudos to Northeastern for making it a little bit easier for the already stressed kids.

The don't require it for ED apps? Seems like that it would be important at that stage.

They don't need it especially for ED apps. ED applicants decided after extensive research and shows the biggest demonstrated interest to the school. You have plenty data and the personal essay says much.

Northeastern is not that popular as an ED choice and they let in over 50% of ED applicants anyway!

It's actually stupid to ask 'why are you applying to our school ' to those students.

Grinnell has a why Grinnell essay that is only for RD. It’s not an option for ED.

SAT middle 50% 1430-1540.
Very high quality students who are good fit to the school

Northeastern is doing one of the best jobs selecting high quality students who are very good fit to the school by looking at the retention rate.

They do it without extra stress to the students.
Huge kudos to Northeastern.

What are the test scores ED? How many even submitted scores? All we know is that it's better odds than a coin flip that you'll get in ED.

For class of 2026, ED acceptance rate was 33%.

Test score is not any different from the previous yeasrs before the pandemic when it was required, so most of students submitted.

Purpose of those extra question(s) is to find the students who are right fit to the school.

So by looking at the retention rate, Northeastern is doing the best job selecting students who are the right fit even without the extra question(s).

Other schools ask extra question(s), yet it turned out not a good fit for students, so more students leave (lower retention rate)

Some think that the questions are to make the poor students life more difficult for no reason.

It is far away from much of the US but it is an exceptionally good college IMHO.

But don’t they ask for a 1 minute recorded elevator pitch from applicants?
