+1 This has to be a troll. So, let’s say there are items white oriole can have, but not black people. Is that okay? Of course not. How stupid |
|
You should not buy it because it’s over-priced.
But that never stopped the status-conscious. So off you go. |
| 99.9 % of woman would not be able to identify the bag. |
Telfar’s slogan is “not for you, it’s for everyone “. So I think they want everyone to purchase and use their bags. Unfortunately they can’t keep them in stock. OP beware, there are bootleg Telfar’s being sold on the internet. |
Yeah, I mean, why stop at tote bags. OP shouldn’t sit in the front of the bus or use certain water fountains. Not everything is for you, right?? Nobody wants someone of another race to give them the “stink eye” or confront them about using things that aren’t theirs, right?? |
| If you like the bag buy it. Carrying a bag from a Black designer is not cultural appropriation. |
+1 I'm biracial (black/white) and agree this is absurd. OP, were you able to get one? I've tried a couple of times but they sell out too fast. |
| They are great bags! Durable, hold lots of stuff, and the little one is adorable. I've used the big one for overnight trips to NYC. Get them! |
| People have taken cultural appropriation to its absurdity. |

How is it cultural appropriation to support a Black-owned business? Seriously backwards.
I remember people passing around lists of Black-owned business after George Floyd's murder, when people cared about racial justice. They did that to encourage white people to buy from minority owned businesses. Some of us are actually making that choice as much as possible still. |
Because it's become a buzzword and people don't actually know what it means. Purchasing a product from a Black-owned business, thereby compensating the Black person for their work and ideas, is the opposite of "appropriation." |
Thank you. I got into argument with a friend over the use of the word appropriation and tbh, I think it damaged our friendship. Basically, I was saying Elvis = Appropriation Eminem = not appropriation But they disagreed, saying if you're not from the culture, but still profit off the culture, then you are doing something wrong. I say that Eminem did not appropriate it because he does not claim it as his own and gives the historical respect to the culture that did create the genre. Even though he profits from it. It's definitely a touchy word |
| I do not understand this "black owned brands are only for black people" mentality. WTF? |
Is this really a thing? |
| OP here. Thank you everyone for your insights. I was not able to get one but will get it next time. |
