Mother is sending sweets and I'm struggling

Give some to your kids, and then give the rest away. Maybe keep the candy you are the least likely to eat.

My "normal" mother regularly sends the kids boxes of chocolates for holidays. She's Italian--it's kind of the grandmother role in Italian-American culture. But I think she also expects the kids to share them with their friends. Giving a box of chocolates is a way to say you give these to the people that come over. She wouldn't really have the idea that anyone would want to hoard a box of chocolates to themselves--it's "company food."

But OP I would just graciously encourage her to send non-sweets--say that you're trying to lower the family's sugar intake--and offer suggestions. And if she doesn't listen tell your kids that boxes of chocolates are to be shared with their friends and throw out what is not eaten asap.

I can not imagine have that little self control over candy. That is a serious problem.

Have some self control. Jesus Christ.

Have some compassion for people who have different struggles than you. Like Jesus Christ.

If somebody sends a perishable treat that will go stale before the child in question can finish it all, it’s pretty normal to just put it in the pantry for everyone to have at.

Here’s how we handle treats in my house:
Each of my kids has a mason jar with their name on it and after any big holiday, we toss any old expired candy still in the jar and replace with their favorite stuff from the new pile. Anything that doesn’t fit gets tossed. They always have their candy in the house, but it’s not so much that it’s overwhelming to keep track of (or so much that it takes them 20 minutes to pick a treat). They get something sweet on e a day or so—usually popsicles or sliced apple with peanut butter dip and I’ll mix in mini choc chips, but twice a week or so they have something from their little jar and we’ve never run out. Between holidays, birthday parties, random school stuff—there’s always and influx of candy so we get more than they could ever eat having a normal sized dessert nightly.

That's a great idea!
