It made a big difference to me as a recent graduate (grad school) that was still renting. Sales tax was a little higher, but I was saving hundreds each month not paying income tax. It actually probably gave me a leg up on adult life by being able to buy a vehicle that wasn’t always breaking down, live in a safer area, pay down my student loans, save for a downpayment. I bought my first house in a different state for $300k at age 29 and paid cash for a new car the next year.
