My 2nd grader’s teacher intends to mask all year

Anonymous

I applaud the masked teacher for protecting themselves. Ask for a different teacher, OP, and get your child speech therapy, like I did for mine. You come off as incredibly insensitive to important medical issues. No speech delay is worth risking someone else's life. And I say this as the parent of a child with multiple special needs who was in speech therapy all throughout elementary.

Its none of your business why they choose to mask. But, good for them.

How could it NOT be an issue?? All the other 2nd grade teachers were unmasked at open house today… I felt a bit jealous.

You can ask principal to move your kid to one of those classes where teachers are unmasked. IF that will resolve your problem. Honestly, masking is an individual's choice and they best know the reason for wearing or not wearing a mask. We still wear mask when indoors.

His teacher said she is immunocompromised and plans to mask all year and maybe beyond “just to be safe”. I get it from the teacher’s perspective. But my perspective is valid too. I feel stuck.

WOW OP - get your child in speech therapy and hire reading tutor. Stop blaming your problems on someone else. You sound awful.

Yes, your child, your problem.

Good for her for putting the safety of these children first!

+1000 We need more teachers like this!

My child's teacher also intends to mask all year and is very soft spoken. I told him just to ask her speak louder if he can't hear or understand her. I assume she has a "teacher voice" she uses during the school day.

But, I will say, this area is bonkers about masks and covid in general.

It’s not bonkers to wear a mask if you are immunocompromised. I would have no choice but to do the same. Wish I didn’t have to!

Would you rather have a cobbled together group of subs/staff pulled from other parts of the building when your kid’s immune compromised teacher gets sick and needs to be out for an extended period of time?

You don’t get to choose whether or not someone else wears a mask, OP.

+1. These teachers are human beings. My son’s kindergarten teacher broke her ankle right before school started and couldnt come to meet the teacher and had to be out a bit for drs appts, etc the first month. It was not ideal. But my goodness. Imagine if you were the teacher placed in this situation. They are doing their best and showing up to educate and care for your child. Your child’s speech delay and reading delay were not caused by this teacher and regardless of whether she masks you need to address them. A student who is still struggling with reading entering 2nd grade likely needs evaluation for LDs. This teacher is not a private speech pathologist. I know it is upsetting to have a child who is struggling and find yourself in what you find to be less than ideal circumstances, but this teacher may actually be a superstar educator and better for your child than other teachers on the team. You do not get to decide if an immunocompromised person wears a mask! Imagine how hard this pandemic has been for her with mask mandates dropping right and left. She literally has no other way to protect her health and she’s still showing up to a class of small children. Take a step back.

You are so lucky that your teacher cares about her students enough to make this sacrifice for their well being!

I understand both points of view in this scenario - the teacher's and the parent's. It IS possible to do that, btw. I think you have options, OP. Unstick yourself.

She’s not wearing a mask because she “cares about her students”. She’s immune compromised. What a stupid comment.
