His 1st grade teacher masked all year too. He has a speech delay and is behind in reading. His teacher said she is immunocompromised and plans to mask all year and maybe beyond “just to be safe”. I get it from the teacher’s perspective. But my perspective is valid too. I feel stuck.
Would you rather have a cobbled together group of subs/staff pulled from other parts of the building when your kid’s immune compromised teacher gets sick and needs to be out for an extended period of time? You don’t get to choose whether or not someone else wears a mask, OP.
+1. These teachers are human beings. My son’s kindergarten teacher broke her ankle right before school started and couldnt come to meet the teacher and had to be out a bit for drs appts, etc the first month. It was not ideal. But my goodness. Imagine if you were the teacher placed in this situation. They are doing their best and showing up to educate and care for your child. Your child’s speech delay and reading delay were not caused by this teacher and regardless of whether she masks you need to address them. A student who is still struggling with reading entering 2nd grade likely needs evaluation for LDs. This teacher is not a private speech pathologist. I know it is upsetting to have a child who is struggling and find yourself in what you find to be less than ideal circumstances, but this teacher may actually be a superstar educator and better for your child than other teachers on the team. You do not get to decide if an immunocompromised person wears a mask! Imagine how hard this pandemic has been for her with mask mandates dropping right and left. She literally has no other way to protect her health and she’s still showing up to a class of small children. Take a step back.
