In the past 6 years, California had net migration of 600,000 residents. CA’s population is 39,350,000.

So it lost 1.5% of the population. That is nothing.

I’m bullish on California, especially as it’s about to undergo a building boom since they are loosening zoning regulations to encourage more residential construction / enhance density. It’s by far the most dynamic economy in the country.

This.

People are leaving that area in droves. And it’s not just the ridiculous housing costs.

I know someone living in what looks like a garage apartment/tiny home for $1M+ (purchased years ago). They can’t afford to trade up and are crammed in there with a new baby. They are hoping to get the hell out of CA asap. They are in the medical field and earn nice salaries.

Schools are an issue, too.

Such nonsense. If people were leaving in droves prices would be falling.

It’s just poor people leaving (and some random doctors are poor compared to Big Tech salaries).

So just make sure you are properly compensated. A Fintech role should pay $1M if you make $355k in DC.

With that kind of comp you can get a small house in Menlo Park and go public.

Sigh.

Let me explain what you are missing.

Workers and retirees are leaving, and their houses are being snapped up by foreign nationals, investment companies, and super wealthy investors.

Like nyc where billionaire row towers are dark because nobody actually lives in the investment properties, SF’s housing market isn’t like most cities.

PS - expect your grocery bill to double if not triple.

Ok so sounds like I should just stop application process as I hate to waste people’s time but am curious how much they would offer me to relocate and pay me with a family of 5

?

Just say that to the recruiter.

“While I am interested in the opportunity, I’m not confident the salary and benefits would be enough to justify relocating to such a high cost of living area. Before proceeding any further, let’s discuss numbers.”

The size of your family won't enter into it from their perspective. Compensation doesn't vary with employee family size.

Prices are falling in San Francisco!!!

I truly don’t understand the hype about San Francisco aside from the tech opportunities.

My husband gets calls from recruiters in the Bay Area all of the time. I've told him there's no way we're ever moving there. There's no way they're going to pay him what it would cost to have a similar lifestyle to what our family has in DC. I love to visit there but at this point in my life would not want to live there.
