Association of your values with Devil / Satan: is it offensive?

Anonymous wrote:This issue came up on a different forum section, but it is more appropriate to discuss it here. Should an atheist feel offended when atheism is associated with the Devil / Satan?

Here are a few opinions:
1. Since atheists don't believe in Devil / Satan, they should not be offended
2. Since atheists know exactly what religious people mean by associating them with Devil / Satan, they have reasons to feel offended.

What do you think? Feel free to mention your religious affiliation to provide context.

You're saying that atheists are morally bankrupt and deserve to burn in a lake of fire for all eternity. I don't believe that it's true, but it's still offensive. Your judgment is offensive. Your believe about what should happen to people is offensive. It's pretty vile, actually.

I do think this is likely the Shen Yun poster. The dig at atheists is specifically a dig at the Chinese communist party. Go hang out in china. People are weirdly superstitious and very "spiritually" oriented even if they don't follow an organized religion (and don't want to). I think most American atheists would not consider most Chinese people "real atheists".

Nice work, Sherlock, but I never claimed otherwise. I even gave the full context in a post on the first page. Here is the reason why I opened this thread: several people on the entertainment thread claimed that atheists should not be offended if they are associated with the devil. I felt like that tangent was a distraction, but a good question for the religion section.

Please don't turn this thread into another Shen Yun thread. If you want to discuss Shen Yun, go to the entertainment section. This thread has a legit, meaningful religious topic that can be discussed without going on tangents about Shen Yun.

I believe that is the implication: you don't believe in God, you likely don't have a moral compass.

Yes but as stated the satan part is meaningless.

Can you explain why it is meaningless? I believe that any association with Satan / Devil by a religious person is extremely meaningful to them. They definitely imply that there is something really wrong with the item (value, person, group of people) they associate the Devil with.

(sorry for the repost: used the wrong word)

Would you find it meaningful if I compared you to Lex Luthor or Dr. Doom? No, you wouldn’t, because you know those are made up comic book villains. You’d laugh at that comparison, most likely. You would not care even if you knew I was a comic book store owner passionate about the works. It would seem stupid.

Let's say someone addresses you using the word "kutabare". Would you feel insulted?

There's no explanation for Satan, other than:

1) Satan is a kind of god or deity
2) Satan is an arm of god

If Satan has any control or influence whatsoever, it's either a God in its own right. Or it's a deliberate arm/personality of God according to god's whims

Of 3), there's no such thing as satan/the devil in any form whatsoever. It's as real as the boogeyman.

Nope. I would laugh at their ignorance. That’s not a word used to address someone. It’s not a noun, it’s an expression.

PP never said those things.

Secondly, don't try to pin authorship of the Bible on PP. She didn't write it.

Let's say it is a Japanese who talks to you like that. Would you still laugh at their ignorance?

This is a real problem for me. Nobody forces you to read or contribute to the thread if it is not a real problem for you. If you want to hang out with Shen Yun cast, you may have to travel to their next performance. The best next thing would be to meet Falun Dafa followers in parks. They can teach you myriads of things that apply to real problems. You will learn just how bad atheism and evolution are. If you are sick, their leader can heal you so you don't have to use modern medicine. There is also the part where Trump was the best president ever. They are definitely more pleasant than me.

You need help.

Yep. That would make the ignorance more laughable.

You don’t seem to understand what it means. You don’t address someone with the word kutabare. Again, it’s not a noun, it’s a phrase you’re telling them to do.
