What's typical to pay someone to drive kid/pick up from school

So 4 hours per day and a tank of gas a week/wear and tear on car, $500 a week.

Find a high school student or teacher at the schoo, who lives near you and pay them well.

Check again the bus route. If you guys are close to school, in my humble opinion you should be the last to pick up and the first to drop off when school is over.

OP here,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll def check into highschool students and teachers, great thoughts!

Hubs and I are both full time physicians working for big hospital systems where we don't control the patients or our schedules so we have no flexibility and cannot just "adjust accordingly" like some have mentioned. That would be great, going to your appt only to be told, oh sorry you can't be seen right now, your doctor is doing car pool duty, come back at 9:30-10am. Wish we would've chosen more flexible professions though esp if we had the forsight of covid!

I’m in a 2 physician household also. We pay a nanny to start at 7 am and do school drop offs and pickups, and after school care. And she watches the kids in the summer and on school days off. Sometimes she does a few errands for us but mostly just need her to be available in case something comes up with the kids and we can’t leave work right away.

PP- to clarify, we pay her for all day even when she is just a the house with no kids.

Agree that if HHI >$500k (and yours presumably is) a nanny or au pair makes a lot of sense. We are only 12 minutes to our school but pickups in the afternoon would be hassle for heavily scheduled parents.

In tried for months to find someone just for afternoon driving. The high schools flaked out after a few weeks. They didn’t want the commitment.

I also did carpooling and quickly learned that whole morning worked well, afternoons did not. The issue had different plans each day. Sports, hanging out with friends etc.

I went back to an Au Pair.

What was your plan when you choose this school? You might be able to find two people but you’d have to pay a premium. Hiring someone full time makes more sense.

This situation is begging for an au pair!

OP here,

No way ever to an au pair again. We had a great one and then a terrible traumatic experience my kids are still processing and I have loved having my house back without worrying having to worry about another person's needs in my home.

I'll look into the nanny suggestion. To the other two physician household with the nanny, what does she do at your house during the day? Cook, clean, shop, etc? Does she have her own car or drive one of yours? How much does something like that cost if you don't mind me asking? It sounds amazing frankly!

We paid someone else’s nanny to take our kids along with the familiy’s kids. We paid her hourly rate directly to her for the hours. It was $25 an hour but that was a couple years ago. Also we had to drop our kids off at the house and pick up from there.

With that much driving you should provide a car. You should pay $25-30 an hour if you want them to do other stuff

Another physician household here. Just pay a full-time nanny who is willing to do housekeeping. Will make much more sense for all involved. You pay same hourly rate for each hour.
