We are excited that one of our children got into a private school. It's about 6 miles away from our house, though a large portion of that driving is on River Road heading in the direction of rush hour traffic, so what takes 15 minutes to get to without traffic can likely take more like 30-45 depending. The bus for the school picks up rather early locally (7am) as I imagine its the first of many stops even farther out. Since school doesn't start until 8:30am, I don't want my ES age child on a bus for an additional 1.5hours more than they need to be both in the morning and the afternoon (would be the last stop in the PM).
We were looking to hire someone to take said child to and pick up from school each day. No other nannying or babysitting responsibilities needed, literally just a driver. What are some others on here paying or what is considered reasonable, etc? Other options like morning care, car pooling with other families, etc. are being explored but I specifically wanted to know this regarding a driver. Thanks so much. |

You need to pay a lot per hour to find anyone remotely reliable. It’s honestly much better gig to be a full time nanny who is a housekeeper while kid at school.
You’d really need to pay at least 3 hours for all the back and forth. And it’s need to be 30+ per hour. The issue is most people you would trust with a young child in the car alone have a real job, need for higher income that is incompatible with the split schedule. It’s a bit of a unicorn. |
| We are getting an au pair because it is impossible to find reliable workers for 1-3 hours a day. I need help for morning and afternoon drop off but no one can survive with that little of part time work. Unless you call an Uber or taxi everyday, it just doesn’t work. It is finding a unicorn without doubt. |

It's not legal for Uber or a taxi to transport an elementary school child alone. |
| You need an au pair. It will be cheaper than hiring just a driver. |
| Car pool with someone from school. |
This question has been asked many times but, honestly no sane person would take it. It is the actual shit job that every parent has to figure out. Best bet would be to car pool or you the parents drive the kid. Sorry! I'm sure you don't want to pay as much as they need to earn to do this thankless job. |
| Report back on price tag. Millions of parents rearrange their lives to drive their kids to the schools, that they, the parents selected for their children. Rethink your outsourcing and put your big girl panties on or send Larla to a school you, as a parent, can get her to. |
You will probably need to do a combination of these - along with working with your partner to share duties and with your employers to adjust work obligations. |
| What time does your staff show up? |
| Why can’t one of you, the parents, take the kid? |

Look for someone who is retired but looking for some extra cash. But you must pay them really, really well or it would never work for more than a few weeks. You have to make it worth their while.

Everyone thinks retired people are the answer but no way would I do this stressful job twice a day with the responsibility of two strange kids in my car. When I am retired that is not how I would want to spend my time. Face it the person has little to no freedom between drop off and pick up and it is incredibly stressful. It was the least fun being a parent but I did it for my kids. |
+1, nor as a SAHP. I have my own kids. No one wants a twice a day pick up and drop off without work in-between except if you pay very very well, plus give a car or pay milage. |
