| I also hate the beach but I have a 5 year old who I feel like I should take to the beach for the experience. She hasn’t been since she was 2 or 3 and she would love the sand and wading in the water. This post is making me consider going to a lake instead, though. |
| I love it but not as much as the mountains or the lake. And I certainly don't love supervising a kid near the water. |
| I think I liked being a kid at the beach. I do not like being an adult parent at the beach. The long drive in traffic, the packing 8000 things, the annoying load in on the same check in day as everyone else in the entire town, cooking and cleaning, schlepping tons of gear through the hot sand burning your feet, supervising kids around a large body of water, sand everywhere, reapplying sunscreen over sandy bodies, endless laundry. I agree with the lady who prefers a resort with everything close by, no schlepping or cooking, lovely servers bringing drinks to your cabana. Being a kid at the beach is like being an adult at a resort. |
| For all of you who get bored at the beach, why aren’t the mountains boring to you? I am the opposite. The beach is so easy to me and the mountains so buggy, slippery, dirty, poison ivy ridden and cloudy/cool. To each their own, I suppose. |
Indeed! And why trash other peoples' loves?! So basic. |
|
I love the beach.
In reading this thread I think some of you may just hate the packed mid Atlantic beaches or crazy FL beaches. There are so many great beaches a short flight away that are relaxing and you don’t see many people on them. Something to consider. |
|
I’m okay with a beach where I can actually swim and there is snorkeling. I hate the Atlantic beaches with the cold rough water.
I also prefer a vacation with different things to do—so Hawaii where there are also hikes, cultural things, etc. I feel trapped if all there is to do is “relax.” I also hate the beach vacation where I am in charge of schlepping everything and cooking all food. |

I love the scenery of a pretty beach, but I’m very pasty and can’t stand too much heat or humidity. If I could sit there under full shade with an air conditioner blowing on me, and without having to lug anything with me, I’d love it!
I’d actually like to do a beach resort vacation just once where there are a lot of non-beach activities, but when I do want the beach, I am pampered with cold drinks and have my own pavilion to lounge in with at least fans on me at all times. DH hates the beach, though, so this might have to be a mom-daughter trip. |
If you're at a lake in the mountains, there are so many options -- swimming, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, biking, hiking . . . totally the opposite of boring. As for "buggy, slippery, dirty, poison ivy-ridden", well, up north and out west, it's not so buggy; with good trail shoes or hiking boots, you won't slip; and it's pretty easy to recognize and avoid poison ivy. OTOH, at the beach, you're sweaty and have sand in your bathing suit and are swatting away those nasty little sand flies or whatever the heck they are. Finally, cool weather is awesome to me -- I loathe feeling sweaty -- just ugh. But, yeah, in the end, I agree with you -- different strokes. |
Lol yes and the privilege of paying thousands to do this. When you write it down it does sound terrible - but I still enjoy taking my kids because they like it. I do like being on the beach itself though - if I didn’t, I might not be as into it for all the reasons you describe |
| The ocean is pretty, but sitting on a hot sunny beach is so boring. Just sitting and burning your skin and eating crap and drink booze every day, I always feel gross after a beach trip. I don't get the appeal. |
| I can tolerate the beach but my husband absolutely detests it. We haven’t been to a beach together in 16 years. We tend to do mountains instead of beaches. |
| I like looking out at the ocean/sea from a beach house or pool, or taking a quick, quiet morning walk on it, but I have no desire to sit on the beach, at all. |
Explain please. |
Why do you have to eat crap and booze. Have been at beach last 4 weeks haven’t eaten any junk, only had a few cocktails with dinner and have lost almost 10 lbs. |
