Why didn't I think to replace all flooring and furniture in my son's cheap, furnished, carpeted off-campus apartment? Or to withhold rent unless he sends me videos of him cleaning (alongside a professional cleaner). Both of these things are totally normal.
My solution has been to avoid going into the apartment - that's been pretty easy. I got him a regular vacuum cleaner, a toilet cleaning kit with disposable scrubbers, and Clorox wipes - the rest is on him. He has his own car and is only moving 2 blocks to another furnished apartment next month so there is no reason for me to get involved.
