My guess is that it's going evolve similar to how we celebrate Memorial Day or July 4th. A lot of people celebrate MLK with skiing. The point is that we remember, which we do regardless if it's burgers on the grill or an apres ski. Juneteenth festivals sound like fun. I don't want any company's marketing department to tell me how to celebrate it; this isn't Valentine's Day. |
Because we can't let BIPOC name their own holidays now, can we? They'll start to think they're our equals. (sarcasm) |

I think it will just be a day off for most White people, devoid of meaning. There is apparently no widely accepted way to be an ally and virtue signaling is abhorrent, so most White people will err on the side of caution and remain quiet. |
Nobody "celebrates" MLK day with skiing. They ignore MLK and what he stood for on his day by going skiing. |
It's a summer holiday, so I'm guessing BBQ. Seems like a good thing to celebrate, regardless of your race. |
No, they use the holiday to go skiing. That's a normal way to use holidays. All holidays get used this way, usually at least with some dose of reflection. At least most people remember MLK and think about him on the holiday. Juneteenth will fall into the normal holiday pattern. |
In Maryland, Emancipation Day is celebrated in early November. Maryland was one of the first states to abolish slavery, ending it in 1864 a year before the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a national holiday celebrating the end of slavery. It did start out as a Texas regional celebration and now it's a Federal Holiday. My dumb trumper brother thought Juneteenth had something to do with rainbows because the local (southern) fireworks sales had signs which read celebrate Juneteenth with fireworks, but there were also pride flags in the picture for pride month, which is slso in June. Our local country club had a fireworks display last night in honor of Juneteenth. |
I celebrate MLK day by reading his essays and speeches. Funny how little times have changed. |
It took 3.5 years, not 6 months. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneteenth |
3.5 is 6+ months, lol. I knew it was awhile, I just didn't know how long! |
Also wikipedia isn't a reputable source, however much people reference it. At best, it is a starting point for further research. |
PP here. I agree with your DH but I don't think big celebrations for Juneteenth are a bad thing. |

As a Black person, Juneteenth is hard for me. I just imagine being the last slave on the last plantation to get word. It makes me angry. That is not something I want to celebrate with white people. But I am not angry at white people. I imagine other people (likely the non-Texans), regardless of race, are still trying to figure out how to feel and how to recognize this day. And that’s OK.
I would rather go to a friends & family cookout, or a church activity, something of that sort. Not a city-wide “all are welcome” shindig. And definitely not a “day of service” community effort. I just want a day to reflect (not celebrate) and relax. |
| I saw on IG some black accounts telling white people to stay home and they are not welcome |
I’m a white lady, and that’s what I suspected. It’s interesting though how Juneteenth is portrayed as “Black 4th of July.” (See Blackish, Black AF, and the annual DC celebration) |
