The Caribbean is better for clear water beaches anda you have a ton of options for your preferences.
That said, I went to Hawaii twice when we were avoiding the Caribbean due to Zika, and to me there is nothing like it and I enjoy it much more than the Caribbean. It feels exotic and Polynesian but it still an American state, so to me there’s a certain level of comfort. Maui has excellent snorkeling. |

Are you taking kids out of school? Mine are 5th and 7th and DH freaks if we miss more than a day due to vacation.
Anyway for 2-3 weeks I say Hawaii but I have a hard time imagining a 3 week beach trip with kids…Europe I can see but we all get a little ties of beach/pool. For a week to 10 days I would do Belize : start in jungle do cave swim, Mayan ruin hikes etc then go snorkeling diving in ambergris caye then hit the beaches further south. Your budget will be fine there. I’d also suggest Costa Rica for a longer trip but know that the beaches are not as beautiful. However the activities and wildlife is worth it. You could start out fly into San Jose and immediately transfer to the osa peninsula,’do several days at a lodge hiking, snorkel Cami island etc then go up to arenal, maybe do volcano hiking etc. and end up at a beach resort (I prefer samara but lots of nice ones in guancaste) and fly back from Liberia. Or you could go to tortuguero and then hit the Caribbean coast which does have surfing good beaches. Or for 10k why not Thailand? The flights will be $ but the rest won’t be. A few days Chiang mai and then hit different beach towns etc. |
Jamaica is pretty awful. |

With 2-3 weeks you will want to do 2 island in Hawaii. I recommend Kauai and Maui.
People complaining about the flight and kids must not be very good travelers. We've flow to Asia with our kids twice including when my youngest was 4. Also went to Maui in 2021 when kids were 9 and 12. So the flight is really no big deal. We also adjusted to the time change quickly, we were only up at 3am the first day and because we expected it we had already planned to go to Haleakela for sunrise. Now budge wise... 10K for 2-3 weeks will be tough. Food, is insanely expensive in Hawaii. Even buying groceries and cooking for yourself is expensive as everything is 2-2.5 the cost of what you would pay here. Lodging, even an airbnb is also expensive and prices have gone up in recent years. If you want to do any tours those also add to the cost as every tour/activity for a family of 4 is easily $600. |
