Is it tacky to hang prints (instead of original art) in our home?

Ok will attempt to clarify. I’m an art lover with a smallish budget. I don’t use art just as decor, l take it more seriously. I go to a lot of museums and galleries and researching art that speaks to me is a hobby. So when l add a piece to my collection it’s been thought about a lot…that’s what l mean by intentional. I do try to hang my art in aesthetically pleasing groupings, but the art itself is more important than how it goes with a color pallet for the room.

Just to give an idea of original art (or limited edition prints) I’ve purchased in about the last 4 years, to show it’s not all breaking the bank

1 original collage $50
I original painting $650
2 signed prints small edition (5 to 20) about $150 each
1 well known DC artist, print from small edition (5), $1500

I wish l had a bigger budget as l love art and supporting artists. But still I’m very happy with my small and slowly growing collection

I see what you’re getting at in terms of intentionality but not maturity, unless you’re equating maturity with money earned over time.

Right? It’s nice that PP is following his or her own taste, but it’s pretty immature to believe that your personal taste is more mature than other people’s. Maturity means accepting that other people aren’t just like you, and that the way you are is not necessarily the highest evolution of being.

+1 My grandmother worked in galleries before marriage and then collected for decades. Once my grandfather died, she gave away her entire collection and bought flower prints because they made her happy.

I am someone whose one indulgence is original art and the “intentional” thing makes me cringe.

Buy whatever the hell you like and want to spend money on!

OP here, thanks all. I am from a family of people with more expendable income than I currently have. They're also really judgy and I worry about them coming over and thinking I am trashy. I am embarrassed to admit that but here we are.

I will definitely look on Etsy and consider the impact of framing. That was helpful! Thank you.

Why does it make you cringe? Is there a better way to say someone put though into buying each piece? Or is that sentiment also “cringe”?

Never hang prints unless you have one of those digital frame TVs, however NFTs may end up changing that rule.

If you like art so much you should learn the difference between pallet/palate/palette.
I will admit to being a terrible speller! Doesn’t impact my love of art though

Tacky is such a crappy term anyway. It’s just so rude to criticize somebody like that who is trying to decorate in a way that makes them happy, and often it’s another way of saying “things poor people can afford.”

(Its different when you’re talking about Trump’s golden office or something; this isn’t universally true)

+1

A nicely framed print is a perfectly fine thing to hang on your wall. You might consider local artists, who often sell at farmer's markets and local art shows. It can feel less generic and more meaningful. But hang whatever you like and don't worry about whether someone else thinks it's "tacky."

Then definitely consider local artists. Then if they are snooty you can drop something about supporting the local art scene or whatever.

It makes no difference whether one purchases art/print because it fits their esthetic or because it speaks to them. Both acts are intentional. Maturity has nothing to do with it.

I’m fortunate to live in a community rich in art (of all mediums), so I have decorated my house in primarily local pieces. For those that are not, most came from Etsy. Cost is somewhere between prints and originals, framing can be expensive (but worth it), and I love that people actually look at my walls when they visit.

The print hatred is weird. I've got some cool prints that I bought at art shows.

Yeah I hate when people come over and want to talk to me.

Some prints are very expensive.

Definitely buy what you like and will love to look at in your home.

I have purchased some framed prints from Minted that I really like. It will run you more than Society6, but the finished product is quite nice.
