NP. The PP is just an idiot troll. Better not to engage. OP, when Sandy Hook happened my kid was in the exact same grade. I remember driving to school and being one of several parents who pulled their kid from school. There were a few more kids than usual who left for private that year, and they were all kids of parents who were waiting with me to pull their kids early. I think your reaction is pretty common. |
OP here. DH has a Ph.D. in statistics. You could look at the stats until you're blue in the face, but ultimately you need to do what feels right. And private feels right. I don't like the comparison to lightning strikes. How often do we hear about lightning strikes on the news or even around the world? I have lived in SO MANY of the cities where mass shootings have taken place. It feels like a small world. |
+1 Yep private schools aren't immuned just bc they're smaller and have the option of more security. AND if you opt for a private school that is religious based (Catholic, Jewish, for example) they might be a bigger target than you think - wasn't there a Hewish private school in NYC that had an active shooter a few years back? |

We’re seriously considering leaving the country so moving to private school seems like a totally reasonable response.
We are tired of the gun violence in the US altogether, not just in schools, and the fact that gun violence is just part of our culture. |
| I wouldnt pull my kindergarten , who has presumably made friends and is now comfortable and well established, all because you need to quell your anxiety and should probably find coping mechanisms for your anxiety and paranoia. |
The two elementary schools were private. |
She sounds normal to me. She is actively looking at options to help with her anxiety. The real question is why do we allow this sh** to keep happening? |
Jeez. And that’s why I said you should switch if it makes you feel safer. If being married to someone who works with and understands stats doesn’t bring home to you that your children’s chances of being shot at school are really low, then you should go with your gut. The data was for those arguing about the statistics. |
| Are shooter drills going about the best course of action? Were those children huddled up in a bathroom? My kids say every drill includes kids being loud while other kids loudly tell the loud kids to be quiet. Why not have a plan for some kids to run to a nearby house or yard if they are close enough? |
What does your husband's profession have to do with this? You're literally saying: screw statistics and do what you feel is right. I mean, I don't care what you do, but it's odd for you to invoke a relationship to a statistician here. |
There are 27,000 private schools in the country. They come in many shapes and sizes. You are generalizing and are clueless. |
| I moved my kids from public to private and the private school is on a gated campus with a security guard. The public school was huge with largely open access. It’s not rational, but it does make me feel better. |
Oh come on. Parents who are making this decision are looking at specific schools to compare, presumably like the PP above. You are being silly. |
Oh please. |
