paying cash for a car?

Carrying around cash is risky and pointless. Unless you don’t have checking account I guess?

I paid maximum the dealership would allow on credit card ($4k) for the cash back, then wrote a check for the rest ($19k).

The dealer has no need to run a credit check and walk out if they demand it. Its a scam.

Yeh. The dealer said they run a “soft” credit check—whatever that is. They ran a regular credit check even though I was not financing through them which is beyond ridiculous and rude. I did write a check for $20k but they didn’t need a credit check to take it.

Scummy dealership.

We did wire transfers.

A dealership can’t do a hard pull credit check unless and until you sign a loan application.

And the dealership filed an IRS Form 8300 about her because it was a cash transaction over $10,000.

And? Unless she’s laundering cash, so what? But carrying around that much in cash is beyond foolish. Police love to do seizure and civil forfeiture for stuff like this.

Similar. Would've put the whole thing on a credit card but they didn't go for that idea.
And yes, if you bring in >$10K in cash, they are supposed to file a report.
