No, but my relationship with my kids is different from the one my mother had with me.

Yes, thank goodness.

Let’s strive to evolve people.

(So let’s lose the Animal House references.)

I may be misremembering, but I don’t believe it was a documentary.

Yes, Dan Savage.

For men, get consent, and use the consent app if necessary.

We told my oldest son to use a condom every time and to make sure that he had enthusiastic consent. It's not enough that their partner doesn't say "no." They should make sure their partner is saying "yes." If someone is passed out, then don' have sex with them If someone is stumbling drunk, don't have sex with them.

Then we found out that he 1) bi and 2) using Grindr and had to have a whole other conversation about being safe.

What did that conversation entail?

1. Grindr isn’t safe, and it’s a bad idea. Go to gay bars and join the GLBT organizations on campus to meet guys.

2. If you are using Grindr, you need to let someone know where you are and when you expect to be back. Tell a friend where you are going and set a silent alarm— if you don’t call them by a certain time, they should assume something is wrong.

3. Ask for their real name, a picture of their face, and phone number before you meet.

4. Meet in a public place before you go anywhere private.

5. Don’t drink or do drugs with a Grindr date.

6 Don’t take your credit cards or a lot of money or stuff with you.

7. If you arrested, shut up and ask for a lawyer.
