| Was this in DC? A lot of people are not tipping because they now make $15 or whatever and food prices were increased accordingly. |
| Always 18-20% and I’ve even done this when I made minimum wage. The most generous tippers I’ve known make very little money but worked in the service industry and understand that it’s important. I’d love to move beyond tipping but only when/if we move to a living wage. People with money they don’t tip are just cheap and out of touch with reality. I also tip delivery or take out but usually a flat rate like $5 I’d order is under $40. |
My question is why did you ask your friend? Why not just add more tip yourself if you see it's short? |
| So rude of you to put your friend on the spot like that. How do you know his financial situation? You should take it up with restaurant owner to pay their staff a better wage. |
OP here, I left $20 cash extra as we were leaving and I received a strange look from my friend and his wife. My wife was not surprised at all, because his wife also doesn't tip at all and I was completely embarrassed by his behavior. |
Firstly, I don't tip 20%. I tip 15%. I think 20% is ridiculous. Also, I don't tip for things I pick-up. I will tip if I felt service at a restaurant is adequate and that would be 15%. If service was terrible, I don't tip. |
If you already knew this about this couple, why do you go out with them? I’d stop doing so, and if they inquire, I’d tell them why. |

I feel weird but I don’t tip at those prompts at fast-food type places. Smoothie shops, Panera, chipotle or whatever. They have a new prompt on their inside registers (but no jar at the drive thru!)
If I have a few dollars cash and there is a jar sometimes I add a tip. I feel so weird about those register prompts bc they didn’t have those for 20 years of my adult life!! |
Me too. I stop going to my favorite coffee shop in my neighborhood because of it. |
This was the first time he paid, usually his wife is the one to pickup the check and I never knew she didn't tip also. I told my wife what happened and she confirmed that the wife doesn't not tip. |
Oh, I’m gonna judge people who don’t tip. Every day and twice on Sundays. |
Minimum wage for tipped employees in DC is $5 an hour. It’s lower because they assume people who eat out aren’t cheap assholes and tip. |

A couple of months ago I went to get a pedicure and was seated at the spot closest to the (open) front door which was also the spot closest to the front desk where people checked out. Two women had come in for manicures and pedicures before me. They checked out, got asked if they wanted to add a tip to the credit card charge and said no. A woman came in to get waxed - I heard she asked for legs and bikini. She got asked if she wanted to add a tip. $2. She tipped TWO DOLLARS.
I felt so bad I tipped $30 on my pedicure. |

DCUM is full of horrid people who boast about tipping well and who virulently diss those who don't tip. If you were really virtuous, you would just do it and not post about it. Nobody's impressed with you, because you're actually full of hate and all you want to do is virtue signal that you're better than other people. |
interesting take, now do religion. |
