Best Deep dish pizza in Chicago

I don't know why haters always have to come into these threads. You don't think deep dish is "real" pizza. NY style is better. Blah blah blah. The OP asked what people's favorite is, don't answer if you don't like it.

My born and raised Chicagoan DH agrees. We've been together 16 years and I've never had it because he thinks it's gross. He will point out that Chicago has excellent pizza outside of the deep dish, and I agree with that!

How is it like lasagna?

It’s more like a calzone with no lid.

You’re a tourist. It’s ok to do the tourist thing. Go to Lou Malnati’s but also get the thin crust pizza cut into squares; we liked it wayyyy better than the deep dish!

Well, of course! I'm from the Chicago suburbs and we only ate deep dish like tourists - when we were downtown or very occasionally at the Schaumburg Lou Malnati's. Everyone gets the thin crust pizza cut in squares with the thick layer of cheese and restaurant-made/local butcher shop sausage. Every town has a couple local places that do this pizza and that's the Chicago pizza that I miss and crave.

Yes, of course, native Chicagoans eat thin crust (cut in squares) most of the time. But you can't get good deep dish in many places outside of Chicago so while you are visiting, you should try it. And I agree with Giordano's stuffed spinach.

The definitive word on the subject. Even if you disagree, it's hilarious.

Alright, if you really want deep dish pizza, go to Lou M's. It's fine. But know that most Chicagoans rarely eat deep dish. We're in a pizza renaissance, with so many good pies. Why not instead try tavern-style, cut in squares with corn meal on the crust? It's just as Chicago as deep dish, and won't leave you sluggish for the rest of the day. Pizano's does a decent job downtown, with Barnaby's in Northbrook up north and Vito & Nick's down south doing mean pies.

There's now even a Manhattan restaurant specializing in Chicago tavern style and they're wildly popular. Square cut tavern-style is a thing.

Here's a list/map that's dated April 2022: https://chicago.eater.com/maps/chicagos-25-iconic-pizzerias

I haven't been to all of these spots and the list certainly isn't comprehensive. But if you're staying in the city, it'll show you what's close. It'll also give you a taste of just how broad the pizza scene is in Chicago.

I love the Chicago style deep dish pizza! I eat it only when I go back and so not frequently. I now live in the northeast and so definitely get good NY style pizza but I’d miss the Chicago style.

My preference (but it’s a bit outdated as I haven’t lived there in a while): Lou M. and the original Pizzeria Uno and Due.

I did my PhD at Chicago (meaning, I lived in Hyde Park for a very, very long time), and I miss Giordano's. The spinach deep dish was amazing! A real great as a graduate student.

If you are in Evanston, Carmen's Pizza. Get the deep dish spinach.

Portillos. Just go to Portillos and get a real Chicago dog and a cake shake. I will allow you to get an Italian beef but only if you get it dipped and with peppers.

YOU'RE WELCOME!

Try the original UNO’s too!
