What Will My Kid Miss by Not Going to Jackson Reed?

The facility is in need of extensive repair and additional space which has been requested, primarily in temporary form, and downtown is generally unsupportive of needed improvements. That said there is likely more academic opportunity than at other DCPS schools and many self funded extra curriculars.

Thank you for this. So is it your sense that Principal Bargeman won’t be the pick for the permanent principal position?did he even apply? As a J/R parent, I have to say I’ve been very underwhelmed and have hope that he’s not the long-term solution.

Yes. I’m pretty sure Banneker has AP Calculus AB. Not 100% sure about AP Calculus BC.
If you have a STEM kid, Wilson might be a better option as they offer more science APs than Banneker. Wilson also offers Engineering + CS course and a strong Robotics team. Banneker does not have any of that.

It is so sad that DCPS has given up on all the neighborhood high schools. What a waste of bright and talented local kids who don’t have the resources to get into Wilson, Walls or Banneker. Somehow I don’t think the DCPS-XQ relationship is going to move the needle

Banneker offers AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics, AP Biology, and AP Environmental Science (and Robotics club and Electric car club). My sense is that Wilson is stronger in STEM though (by looking at AP scores).

Wilson is definitely stronger in STEM. They offer all the above classes + Engineering and Biomed pathways + AP Calc BC + AP Chem + AP Physics 1 + AP Physics C + AP CS Principals + AP CSA (Java)

He has said he is returning to be an AP next year. He was interim last time there was principal turnover. He's been there a long time and seems willing to keep things steady during transition. I'm grateful he stepped up twice to do this, especially this year, which must have been unbelievably difficult.

It couldn't possibly and is enormously tone deaf. There are so many kids who are promoted year after year that are not proficient in either math or ELA, what could possibly be done at the high school level that would "move the needle?" What even is the needle? DCPS-XQ is far worse than "Alice Deal For All" which was a failed campaign promise; this stupid XQ BS actually has money being thrown at it.

+1 I am not inbound for Lafayette or Shepherd, but I really hope that they pull them out of Deal/J-R together and route to a Ward 4 middle/high school path. It would immediately create another viable neighborhood school and fix Ward 3 overcrowding. It has to be better to have everyone in the city fighting over two neighborhood high schools than over one!

Not gonna happen with the new MacArthur Blvd high school coming online. I agree with you that Shepherd and Lafayette should go to Wells and Coolidge (and before you say there's no room, either move the early college academy to Dunbar, or build an extension on Coolidge...it won't cost more than the MacArthur renovations) and also think Oyster should become PK3-5 and be routed along with Bancroft to MacFarland and Roosevelt. Wilson would no longer be overcrowded and other schools would get more high-performing students. If DCPS did this well (for example, guaranteeing honors and AP courses for anyone who gets a 4 or 5 on PARCC even if that means having a class of 4 kids or something) it could be really effective.

You need a strong mayor to do that. Someone with a long term vision. Not gonna happen under Mayor Bowser unfortunately

Nobody cares what you think unless you have kids there, and you have no business opining on something that does not effect you. This is a fantasy that keeps getting thrown out there by the social justice warrior crowd on here, so please move on. Fixing ETOP high schools shouldn’t fall on the backs of Shephard Park/CC kids.

If you think creating a second desirable by-right high school in DC only effects the parents of the first kids to be rerouted there, you're very shortsighted. Also, it's *Shepherd Park.

And while we’re correcting spellings, to both of you, it’s affect, not effect!

The new macarthur school will be 1000 students. Can't Lafayette + Shepherd get almost all the way there themselves?
