Geez - and I thought it's a free country and I can have my own rules in my own house. I guess not because DCUM is a mom police. Are you serious? Are you all going to criticize me for doing what I think is right in my own house? You do not know me, the house we have, how old my childen are and how active they are. You do not know why I have no running in the house policy. Keep the opinions to yourself, take care of your kids and don't worry about mine. I was simply responding to OP's question.

I absolutely let my 3yo DD run around the house - only rule is no socks because we have hardwood everywhere and not on the stairs.

She has so much energy that needs to burn off - even after being outside for hours and jumping on the trampoline, etc. She just loves to run.

We actually make it a game and take turns chasing each other around (including the dog). Quite a bit of fun!

My nearly 2 and nearly 4 year old run laps and chase around a loop in our living room, on hardwood floors, wearing socks. I can't imagine making them walk all the time in our house. They don't run in stores or elsewhere because they know that's not allowed. Home is okay though. No running allowed on stairs or in kitchen or bathroom (tight quarters with lots of things to smack into). They understand and follow the rules and do just fine. And seem to have good balance, probably from all of that sock footed hardwood floor running.

I'm one of the permissive parents who lets her kids run. My kids also race each other while pretending to be animals (i.e. crab, snake, rabbit, etc .). They love it.

Maybe designate a "run zone." Our daughter's allowed to do the "run and jump" into pillows from hallway to TV room. Basically, as much as she wants. Nothing there to hurt her....

So much depends on your home, its layout, how cluttered it is, the kinds of floors you have, how fast your kids run, if you wear socks of not, if you have stairs, if you have glass, etc.

Yes, we do let our son run in the house--but we are an informal family. We chose our furniture because the pieces are both stylish and family-friendly (rounded edges, sturdy, no glass). We don't wear shoes in the house, and our home is relatively clutter free.
