Johnny Damon (Red Sox traitor that he was) used to run 160 loops around the outside of his Orlando home every day growing up. (Boredom was the cause). Maybe we can change this thread to something about baseball. |
I let mine run when the baby isn't sleeping. |
I also let them jump on the couch. |
I don't let them run because our house is a series of tight turns -- too much potential for tripping and landing on something sharp.
We have a kid-size trampoline -- one of those little things with the handlebar. And we do a lot of freeze dancing. We also take them out in crappy weather. |
When we used to live in a 800 sq foot apt, my son would do laps in the cold weather. I had already moved anything breakable a when he started crawling so I figured why not? I think it is a bit weird to have little kids and not allow them to run somewhere in the house esp if they can't get outside. My DS would go crazy or drive me crazy if he couldn't get some energy out. |
my 2.5 y.o. DS just got his first pair of real running shoes. i've been chasing him around the house for days! i wish we had more room, but he still loves to run around the kitchen island, and through bedrooms. what's the harm? we think it's fun. |
NO! My kids had 2 trips to ER when they bumped a corner or fell near the furniture. One split his lip, other has a scar near his eye. It doesn't matter how careful they are when they run, it's just dangerous. Why can't they run outside (other reasons than rain/blizzard)? |
Now that my kids are 4 and 6, they are not allowed to run inside anywhere. They felt that because they could run in our house, they could run in the grocery store, the ballet studio, the library, the elementary school. I got so tired of telling them to walk, slow down, stop running.
Finally just made the rule that if they are inside, they are not allowed to run. And obviously, they can't run in dangerous situations even if they're outside (swimming pool, parking lot). |
Mine can run around the house and jump on their beds. They are not allowed to stand or jump on furniture though.
Our house has been preschooler proofed....all breakables have been moved to higher ground or in guest bedroom. |
I let my kids run on carpeted areas where there is space - but I stop them from running on the hard wood and kitchen areas since there it is dangerous. I love it when they chase each other down the halls and into the bedrooms on the carpeted areas - we dont have a backyard so I dont have a choice but to let them. |
OP I have a girl and boy who run through the house like banshees. I have actually left up a few of the baby gates to block some of the running paths and split off a few rooms. I also always close the upstairs stairway gate to stop running up and down the stairs. |
I have *safe* areas where I know a little running is fine and in all honesty think it helps with afternoon napping. I tend to worry if it gets quiet way more than if I hear the thundering of footsteps running back and forth. |
Why stop there? Accidents happen at the playground too, or do you not allow climbing on playground equipment? What about sports? You surely will not allow them to sign up for team sports, the chance of injury is very high. Most kids do run outside, but many people have boys, like mine, that though they spend a few hours each day outside, they still like to be physical inside. |
One of my friends from high school is an anesthesiologist at a DC hospital. He told me about a 3 yr old boy who came in with a broken neck- jumping on his bed, and landed across the footboard with his neck. Permanent paralysis. Talk about scary, and a freak accident. Beds are not trampolines, and not safe for jumping. Just something to think about. (yes yes, i'm sure we all did it and are fine. except those of us who are not.....) On a lighter note: no running in the house. This is DC--when is the weather ever so bad that you can't go outside? Rarely. And when do they get too big for it? Do I let my 4 yr old run through the house, but not my 10 yr old? No running for anyone. |
And they can't hurt themselves running outside? Our neighbor's DD fell on the sidewalk and had to go to the ER just last week. Another kid down the street tripped on a tree root and needed stitches. I guess I just don't follow your logic. |
