Peer pressure to mask in elementary?

Totally agree.

My FCPS school is the opposite. Our administrators have never masked properly, nor have most of the staff, and now are not masking at all. Most teachers aren’t masking, so most students aren’t masking. There is definitely peer pressure to stop masking now. It’s very dispiriting. I continue to mask with a well fitting KF94 as I have all year but I am definitely the exception.

5th grader pointed out that he felt he must mask to hide his smirk from his teacher.
Masks are also useful in the game of "Who is making that noise?" Which is so popular with the elementary school crowd.

No DD hasn’t encountered any issues but about 1/3 of her class was unmasked first day grew to half by end of week. Her teacher is still masked. Her teacher also did a good job of explaining everyone can do what feels right for them.

FCPS repeated this phrase so many times that you are completely brainwashed by now🤣🤣. Just get over it already. If you need something to worry about, start watching the news. The war in Ukraine is way bigger deal than masks in schools. Channel your worries over there.

Are people saying things to you about masking? I teach third grade. I posted earlier that 15 of 26 were unmasked March 1 and since then I’ve had about 20. I stopped March 1 too and I’d say the staff is about 50/50. I haven’t heard or been made aware of anyone pressuring others to unmask. What are they saying that is dispiriting?

+1

I bet there are other kids who give mask-wearers a hard time, just like with adults. No need to catastrophize it.

Typical…the caring culture ONLY refers to everyone wearing a mask forever and ever.

Of course it doesn’t involve bullying, peer pressure etc towards people who are perfectly in their right to stop wearing a mask.

My kid hasn’t experienced any rude comments, but the peer pressure is there for sure. She was eager to unmask the first day but felt she couldn’t because no one else in her class (2nd grade) was unmasking. She stopped wearing it the second day, and at this point there is apparently one other kid unmasked.

The numbers are largely school dependent and even classroom dependent. My kindergartener’s class (same school) has about one-third of the class now unmasked.

My child is in the second grade, she is fully vaccinated and we gave her the option to wear a mask or not to wear a mask. She chose to not wear a mask during certain parts of the day. She was told by a fellow student I hope you enjoy getting the virus. She then proceeded to tell a boy if I get the virus bad because I’m fully vaccinated unlike you. So I can choose not to wear a mask when it has nothing to do with you.

Oh wow! Kids peer pressuring each other!!!??

In other news, the sky is blue.

Just like the parents on the other COVID mask thread who are boasting about how they plan to never give their kid another COVID test, even if they clearly have symptoms or are sick, because then they might have to quarantine. They'll send those kids back to school when they're feeling better — whether infectious or not — without a mask on because they don't give a crap about anyone but themselves.

No peer pressure either way according to my kids. I’m sure we are going to run into this everywhere. Just teach your kids how to respond. I imagine we are going to have both mask and anti-mask bullies in school for a little while.

Actually staying home until you are feeling better is the right way to handle this from here on out. Once you feel better, of course you go back.

My two ES kids aren't masking. That's enough caring as far as I'm concerned.
