Peer pressure to mask in elementary?

Anonymous
Is anyone else’s child facing this? My child was told to put their mask back on the other day by another student. My child had taken it off for a 10 minute break. So much for a caring culture.

My kid's school is good about teaching what optional means - you can do it or not do it - and that you shouldn't say anything to anyone about their masks choices. I reinforce that home with my kids too.

I tell my own kids they can do what they want. If someone said something to them about not wearing a mask - I would talk to them about the truth about masks and say - you can only control yourself - some people can't do risk assessment rationally.

Wearing masks is part of a caring culture. You know, trying to keep others safe. Not just caring about yourself, etc.

You don't care about the cons of masks so you're not caring either.

My kids refuse to take their masks off at school because everyone else is masking -- peer pressure. They are not willing to be the first ones.

No, but we are in APS. They have said no one should mention masks to anyone.

Respecting others choices is what the caring culture is about. Transmission risk is low and FCPS agrees.

+1 Our child has stopped wearing masks. We told her to not talk about anyone else's mask usage at all. She hasn't reported any issues.

It sounds like your child encountered one rude child. It happens.

I have not heard anything like that at our school. we have a friend whose kids are not masking at school and no one has said anything to their kids. I told DS that he was going to wear his mask, at least for now, but not to comment on anyone else's choice.

Tell your kid to ignore the other kid or tell him to tell the other kid to mind their own business. If the kid keeps up, your kid should tell the Teacher.

I am sure elementary school kids have never had opinions on other things until masks came along.

I agree, but not even rude. Nervous or confused, maybe. One kid and one comment is just a nothingburger.

Lol, let your child deal with it, no need to to involve internet in it.
