So that they don’t have to pay for private K through 8th

This.
The greatest score is getting the private diploma without paying for all those years of school. The trick is getting in at 9th and the faculty don't have to worry about this.
Also, it's pretty great to attend your neighborhood school for elementary as the kids meet friends who are all in walking distance. My kids attend a Big3 but all their closest
friends (the ones they'll know until they're 90) are from public elementary.

Hello, new to the area and we expect DS will be applying to independent high schools next year. Just curious what is so special about Maret vs the bigger name schools like Sidwell, GDS and the cathedral school? Thanks.

Nothing. SFS, Maret, STA/NCS, GDS, Potomac are basically interchangeable. It’s literally just a numbers game. Maret is tiny so seemingly more “ competitive.”

The odds of being admissions to a Big3 school in the 3rd grade is much higher than the 9th.

well no, not if you’re considering cathedral schools as big 3. very rare to have spots at bvr in 3rd and STA/NCS start in 4th.
