| I’m feeling bummed. Waitlisted for Maret. How many kids got in? How many waitlisted? My child is devastated! Did anyone get in? |
| So sorry, we’re waitlisted as well. |
| Why did you use three "?" That makes it seem like you're shocked and you can't believe what you're hearing????? |
| My son was also waitlisted. |
| Daughter waitlisted. We're staying on the WL hoping for movement |
|
I don't know if this helps but of the 24 admits, 12 were children of teachers or had siblings at the school. That means 12 spots for hundreds of applicants.
|
That like a 5% admit rate because they had at least 300 applicants. Add in URM and the gender split and it's like 3 white girls, 3 white boys, 3 URM boys, 3 URM boys. Crazy. |
| Why are children of teachers entering at 9th? |
| Using words like “devastated” is simply ridiculous, OP. Get a grip. |
| Why shame someone's child if that is the school they wanted to go to of course kids are going to be sad and heartbroken. |
+2 If your child is devastated, you didn’t do your job as a parent. Disappointed, sure. But devastated implies that child was expecting to be admitted and was surprised with the WL. Maret accepts very few kids in for 9th (or any grade). This is a fact that is easy to discover. Your job as a parent is to explain (months ago) that they only let in 20 kids (if that is the number), which means 10 boys and 10 girls. Then you back out siblings, legacies, athletes and you may have room for 5 boys and 5 girls. They are going to want diversity so maybe 2 white, 2 black and 2 other URM. This is the reality. Maybe they over admit by 5 kids to get to the number they want figuring in yield. Once your kids knows these numbers they go into decision day with no expectations and only fingers crossed for good luck. I have done this 4 times and I have learned to ALWAYS be enthusiastic about schools that aren’t as selective. So if you love Maret, also love Burke. Or if you love Potomac also love SSSAS. Get the idea? I am sorry, OP. I know it sucks. Your kid will be fine where ever they end up. I hope my post is read by parents going through this next year. |
How much money do you think those teachers earn? |
Most schools have tuition remission or discount for teachers and calculate FA without including teacher’s salary. If Maret doesn’t they should be ashamed. |
If a 13 YO eighth grader is truly “heartbroken,” that they didn’t get into a particular school, that is 100% on misplaced parental pressure |

Not to pile on the OP but in case future parents read this---my thought was also "no kid should be devastated. That means they thought they were getting in".
I've been through this rodeo three times. My last kid just applied for high school. We let him do his interviews and then told him. "I'm really proud of you for jumping through those hoops. You did an awesome job However, the odds are very, very long. You are probably not getting in--there are many hundreds of kids applying who are just like you. If you do get a spot we'll have to figure out if you want to take it. Now let's assume you're going to public high school". ---and then spent the last month casually being very, very positive about the public option. |
