When skiing, what to do if you accidentally get on a run that's too difficult?

You need to take lessons. When my kids were little and were scared to go down black slopes, their Austrian instructor told them that they need to be able to get down any slope. It doesn’t have to look good, but they have to get down somehow. So the next slope they took was a black slope, they went down and it wasn’t a big deal.

Omg I just had a flash back. We were at Deer Valley and my dh said that the double blue wasn't bad and I could do it. I got up there and it was so steep and so narrow I freaked out. My MIL was skiing with us and I don't know what I would have done because dh had already skied down and I was stuck at the top gripping the mountain.

After, my dh said maybe that was more difficult! I later skied it just to concur my fear and I did...but never again!

In extremely cases, do not even bother walking. Just hold your skiis and slide down on your bum..

This happened to me! It was only my second time skiing and I got confused at the top of the trails. Somehow I ended up on a black diamond. I basically scooted down on my butt the whole way. It was horrible. It was even more horrible because people kept yelling at me as they went by! "You shouldn't be out here!!!!" Like, no sh*t buddy!

So yeah, pretty much just butt scooted and cried.

Thanks! What if the slope is too steep?

taking your skis off is a last resort, IMO.

Just know you will sweat, your quads will burn and you will be muttering expletives under your breath the whole way.

Yup!

Steep & icy? Flop down to the uphill side of the skis, so the skis are parallel to the hill and you're sitting on the side of your butt. Slide. Snowboard version: sit on your butt, keep your board in front of you, knees slightly bent, and slide.

Not icy? Do the traverse thing. Long, slow path from one side to other. Slow turn at the end if you can. If you can't, sit down at the end, flip your skis over to point the other direction, then go back. Snowboard version is the same, but no need to flip, just see-saw back and forth, facing downhill the whole time. Be careful of fast skiers zooming down the middle - they are supposed to yield to slower skiers, but can't always react quickly if you pop out in front of them.

What is ski patrol going to do?

Nothing, really. They will verbally guide you on how to get down, but they won’t carry you. Moral support, I suppose.

Likely ski patrol is too busy dealing with injuries and lost kids, so they really don’t have time to do with someone having a panic attack on a black diamond.
