When skiing, what to do if you accidentally get on a run that's too difficult?

I accidentally ended up on the black diamond offshoot of what was supposed to be a nice groomed blue (alone). It was a short part uphill of the blue run but entirely huge moguls. I cannot ski moguls. I could not figure out how to maneuver down so did end up taking off my skis and working my way over to the blue. But agree that if you are out west (I was), and you take off your skis, you will end up in deep snow. It was not fun. If it was not moguls I would have just done what others suggested and skied wide turns and taken it super slow cursing all the way.

Badly sprain my knee, and decide never to downhill ski again.

Sorry, that was me. Hopefully you have a better outcome!

taking your skis off is a last resort, IMO.

Just know you will sweat, your quads will burn and you will be muttering expletives under your breath the whole way.

This. I hate skiing even though I’m competent at it. My husband loves it so I suck it up and go. A few times he’s asked me to go on runs with him where he has overestimated my skill level or perhaps thought I could handle it.

I still have nightmares what happened to me! My dh convinced me that this double blue" was very easy and "you can do it" This was Deer Valley and it was very high, very narrow and very icy. Dh skied down ahead and luckily my MIL was skiing with us and she coached me down very lovingly and patiently. Otherwise, I might still be up there! So, so scary!

Giant wide turns with a pause, stay in the sunnier area if icy. I am a good skier and got on a black mogul and had to go down on my ass on the side, in retrospect I should have taken off my skiis and walked. Be very careful on moguls as if you fall and are stuck for a bit behind a mogul you are obstructed and other skiers can see you and can hit you.

Side step down if you can. Sit down and cry if you can't.

Flail and be very unpredictable and dramatic.

Glad you did. When I was younger and a much better skier, I was going down a black diamond mogul run when a woman behind me lost control, did a jump off a mogul and ran into me. She broke her nose with one of her skis. Fortunately, I wasn't badly hurt.

Move to the side. Go as slow as possible. Don't feel foolish taking your skis off and walking when it's not too steep.

Do NOT crouch down, close your eyes, and hope for the best.

This.

Ask me how I know.

Scissors, huge, wide scissors, slow and steady. Always remember, you ski with your whole legs and even with your toes and feet, and keep putting pressure so you don't fly off.

There's lots of good advice here, but sometimes hills are very steep and there isn't much powder to catch an edge against. In those cases, it will be almost impossible for you to try the "turn / stop / turn stop" technique (which actually works very well).

In extremely cases, do not even bother walking. Just hold your skiis and slide down on your bum..

Oh god this brings back a bad memory. Last run of the day down to the town in Zermatt and accidentally made our way to the black which would have been fine except it was totally skied off and super narrow with turn after turn. Just gritted our teeth and hopes for the best but it was crowded and chaotic and an utter disaster. Note to self…pay more attention to signage.

Curse myself with slight panic and then make my way down the hill at my own pace. When I get to the bottom I tell myself that was not so bad and stupidly go back up and do it again and repeat same pattern.

Slide over moguls with your skis parallel. Most of weight on downhill ski. Slowly. Ski across the hill.
