| Both DD and I disliked liked it when we toured - so she didn’t apply. So much of the tour guides statements turned us both off. Saw little appealing other than the campus setting. |
So where is she going? |
This post against the one on the previous page talking about how ugly the campus is just goes to show that peoples’ proffered reasons for disliking the school are somewhat arbitrary. |
| I have no connection to Amherst and no dog in this fight and encountered this topic under Recent Topics, but I am here to say it's incredibly bizarre to start a post for the purpose of complaining about a school that the OP allegedly has no connection to. This post has a strong scent of sour grapes. |
I think that’s true for most threads here bashing one school or another. |
| To each their own, I guess. My DS loved Amherst when we toured. Campus was beautiful, especially the part overlooking the baseball field, etc. It's not pristine looking like Middlebury, but that's part of what what we liked. Nice town and surrounding area. He found it peaceful. |
+1 Like so many other college threads. |
I am an Amherst alum, and “peaceful” is very much how I think of the campus. |
| I think OP has a particular gripe with Amherst but I did think it was kind of a generic, selective school when I visited years ago. Liked Williams much better but turned them both down for an Ivy. |
At least OP does ask—what’s its appeal? |
Ha ha. Love the stupid ass comments that suggest URM students can just waltz into highly selective schools. We attended an info session so I know your statement is stupid AF. Amherst gets plenty of diversity from international students. |
Interesting. What about the tour guide statements was such a turn off? |
White supremacy is a serious drug. SMH |
| Legacy at Amherst (even though they've announced that doesn't matter) but DC will likely not apply because we live on the other side of the country and I want to try to steer him towards schools that don't require two and three flights to get to/from campus/home. Learning that hard lesson now with step daughter - it's a real consideration. |

My daughter goes to UMASS Amherst and her apt last year was walking distance Amherst in same street. I actually saw Harrison Ford right on grass in front moving in his son.
It is small and for very wealth and Amherst is like the Gilmore Girls town. That said Long train or car ride from DC |
