Gun at Yorktown

Not disgusting. It’s spot on. All this hysteria over masks and collective shrugs at school shootings.

I mean. They're not wrong. Priorities are messed. up.

Agreed - I cannot believe people care more about damn masks than they do about guns. Seriously? My kid doesn't give a shit about wearing a mask, but she called me on her way home from school (she attends Swanson) freaked out about this. You know how I consoled her? By telling her there wasn't an "active shooter" - do you understand how messed up that is? That phrase left my mouth and I had to consider it CONSOLATION?? JFC, I can't believe what we have come to.

And to add - thank you, teachers, for everything that you do. I hope you know that many of us out here appreciate you.

I bet the teacher shortage will be worse next year. Asshole parents, Covid, low pay and gun threats aren't going to go away.

Yes it is. Truly tasteless to poke fun at this situation when there were kids who were stuck in lock down with no info some of them likely scared out of their mind.

APS shitshow.

They weren’t on lockdown. They were on secure the school- very different. Class continues as normal when in secure the school, they just don’t let people in and out. Obviously they decided that the threat was removed enough that WMS could dismiss as normal.

Nope you are wrong. Discovery was in lockdown for 30 minutes. It was announced "this is not a drill." Later it was shifted to Shelter in Place.

Just got an update for the freshman and JV games tonight are canceled.

Also, The Varsity Boys Game will not have student fans. ONLY Parents can attend at Yorktown High School.

Good grief, you should have to forfeit. Arlington's cancellations have forced some teams in Fairfax to play weekend games and three games in a single week. It's a bit much.

Your priorities are deeply messed up.

An awful lot of WMS parents were pretty upset that they just released students to roam the neighborhood while evacuating Yorktown and putting Discovery in lock-down.

Yorktown wasn’t evacuated when WMS let out, it was under lockdown with a massive security presence keeping pedestrians far away. WMS students were likely much safer today than they are on the average school day.

Wrong! They announced over the loudspeaker “this is not a drill”. Kids had to go sit along the walls of the room and could not talk. Kids were crying because some had phones and got texts/emails about siblings at Yorktown where the threat was.

Friends of mine with kids at Yorktown got texts from their kids that they were being evacuated right before Williamsburg released. And if there was definitely no threat, why lock down Discovery? Obviously nothing happened in the end, but you can’t blame Williamsburg parents for being upset at the time that their kids were released while Yorktown was in lockdown, people were at least preparing to evacuate, and no one knew what the eff was going on.

A lockdown can only be ended by police escorting each class out of the building- like they did at YHS today. It can’t end with another announcement- very clear in the yearly trainings school staff get on it. Sounds like the principal overreacted to a call to go into shelter in place. Not saying the kids weren’t upset by it all- sounds like an admin screw up though.

Also, WMS wrestling and other after school events continued while DES next door was on lockdown.

You seem to be using terminology differently than the schools. Here is what discovery sent out:

Arlington Public Schools instructed Discovery personnel to activate our Lockdown Procedures in response to the situation at Yorktown High School, as a proactive measure to keep students safe. Discovery is very well trained for situations, and we immediately activated the School Evacuation Team, which took all necessary steps to secure the building fully. All students were immediately secured in place and were safe and with their teachers. The lockdown occurred at approximately 2:45 and lasted thirty minutes. At that point we were in a Secure the Building phase, which means we could not go outside. The Secure the Building was lifted right before dismissal.

I would have been upset as a WMS parent had the school been locked down for an anonymous threat called in to a different school.
