A critique of pet owners? Really? They're getting specific about the best type of bat to use (a cricket bat, in case you're wondering) and advise carrying a baseball for plausible deniability (in case anyone thinks you're carrying the bat around with the intent to bash a dog without provocation, I guess). That's more of a fantasization than a critique.

Also, is it really appropriate to post a critique of pet owners in a Pets forum? That's like me coming uninvited into your house and then taking a steaming dump in your living room because I think your toilet is dirty.

You know, I generally try to avoid using words like “unhinged” and “irrational” to describe other posters, but you’re making a strong case for me to rethink my position.

You know, I don't really care. If the gratuitously graphic descriptions of how to hurt dogs doesn't bother you, then I really don't care if you think negatively about me.

Hurting dogs to protect humans is ok. Yes it's the owners fault, but humans come before dogs. Always. Sorry (not sorry).

That's not the point of contention, and it never has been.

It's frequently a point of contention in the pets forum.

That's not what this thread is about.

It actually is. Because while I didn't see the removed posts you were talking about, I know the similar points of contention. People have (rightly) said that they would kick a dog approaching them or their child, which is the fair and right thing to do (or pepper spray, or other means of defense). One need not wait until the dog has attacked you, to defend yourself. No one has suggested just going up to dogs and kicking them, but if one approaches you unsolicited? Do what you gotta do.

Owners need to be responsible for their animals at all time. Be control at all times, keep them on a short leash at all times, train them well, and there won't be an issue. But I'll be damned if I have to wait to be attacked to defend myself against an approaching strange animal.

It actually is not, and the fact that there were posts removed, which you admit, proves it. Sure, it may be neccessary to hurt a dog to keep it from hurting you, but as the OP stated, people have been crossing the line into elaborate ways to hurt them. It's really sadistic, and does not belong next to threads eulogizing the euthanizing of a beloved family member. Also, protecting yourself from a charging dog is not rocket science, so asking how is practically soliciting fantasies of animal abuse. There is no need to delve into the different ways to hurt a dog in a forum supposedly dedicated to the care of pets.

Keep your dog on a leash and you won’t have this problem.

I'd add, keep your dog on a short, non-retractable leash, and under your control at all times, and you won't have this problem.

And nobody's just going up to random people's dogs and hurting them.

I think the point is, most people in the pets forum have pets, love their pets, sometimes struggle with their pets, want to know the solutions to behavior issues, which foods are best - where to take them, etc etc.

It's like a pet club where everyone helps each other out and where people whose pets have died come to say so and everyone is supportive.

If posts like the one about getting baseball bats and electric shocks to use on another person's pets become the norm, then it completely corrodes the spirit of that forum and pushes out all the positivity.

Its like the anti-MCPS folks rampaging through the MCPS forum or the UVA versus UMDCP fighters. It contributes very little to possibly zero in terms of positive, thoughtful interaction.

That's just my 2 cents.

^^^Exactly. There are a few threads that yell at pet owners about their pets, and it's like atheists trolling the religion forum. Or like blaming the posters in the Health and Exercise forum for anorexia. Or posting a bunch of air pollution threads in the Cars forum.

Meant to say, it would be like posting stories of anorexia in the *Diet* and Exercise forum.

The point is that this forum is arranged by subject. When starting a new thread to ask a question, we’re all supposed to put questions in the appropriate forum. “What am I supposed to do to defend my children from unleashed dogs?” is a question about animals - pets - making it a question most suitable for the Pets forum.

If so many dog owners weren’t entitled fools who think everyone loves a strange dog running up to and jumping on them, who thinks that dogs off leash are fun and welcome in every park, parents wouldn’t need to ask what’s an appropriate way to defend their children. Especially in a world in which pit bulls are a constant menace. “He’s friendly!” I don’t believe you. I don’t want your strange animal running up to me and my children.

I am OP - and those sorts of violent threads are common enough that I avoid the pets forum most of the time. The threads where people are supportive and helpful are wonderful.

I wish there were an anti-pets forum for the hateful people who like talking about how they will take baseball bats to dogs who haven't actually done anything except exist in the same space as them, when they don't want them to. They are really sick. They talk about poisoning dogs, shooting them, kicking them - and they come up with horrible justifications for these violent fantasies. Animal abuse is a real problem and these horrible people are talking about it like it's their form of erotica.

This isn’t a great argument since the Diet & Exercise forum is full of stories of anorexia. 😬

Yeah that's very true - I think if I were someone who was very sensitive to pro-ana discourse I would be really disturbed by that forum, in just this same way. It's not my issue so it's easy to avoid or ignore.

It's actyally a question about defending your children. So it doesn't belong in Pets

There aren't any on the first page. So I wouldn't say it's "full".

The people who would know more about animals and what will effectively prevent them from attacking one’s children are pet owners.
