Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
| haha great! |
You can make lemonade w/ lemon juice, though. We always have lemon juice on hand, and if she has that and sugar, too, it would be no out-of-pocket expense. Definitely frugal! The Hillbilly Housewife has lots of frugal cooking ideas. |
| Only DCUM would fight about friggin lemons. |

OP again. I can't believe I made it to Thursday! I went shopping once more -- bought more milk, some mayo, some tomatoes for about $10. But I still have a little bit left.
I invited another family over for turkey tacos tonight -- they are bringing cheese and extra fixings; I have plenty of beans rice and turkey meat. |
| OP, I'm pretty impressed. Good work! |
|
Milk at Safeway is on sale for 1.99! There is a coupon for a Safeway frozen pepperoni pizza for 2.99. You can get the coupon up at the entrance or sometimes they have stacks of the circular on the ends of the checkstands. 80% ground beef is on sale for 1.49 a lb on Friday. Sat and Sun.
I can't resists but lemons are on sale 3 for $1. |
|
OP again -- we had LEFTOVERS from dinner last night! 1 pound of turkey meat, a bunch of tortillas, 2 cans of black beans and fixings like chips and salsa fed 8 people with leftovers.
OK, in honor of DCUM I'm making lemonade this weekend! |
Good job Momma! Where is it your DH works that they provide lunch! |
|
Oh, I just meant he buys it from his own pocket money, so to speak. I don't have to factor his lunch in the grocery budget.
I DO have money, if I need it; it's just I set a certain amount of money for food and household/kid expenses every two weeks, and I seriously went over budget this month. But I'm back on track, now! |
| Eggs are a great stretch. A dozen eggs are pretty inexpensive and you can do so many things with them, as posters above have mentioned. Plus they are good for protein. |
Ah, I thought you were broke and only had $83. Still, well done. |

Buy a turkey, find a supermarket that might have them on sale. Then you can have roast turkey one night and use the leftovers for sandwhiches, quesadillas, casseroles, soup, added to mac n cheese etc. You could probably get a whole weeks worth of meals out of one.
Tuna noodle casserole, you probably have all the things needed in the pantry already PB&J for everyone a couple lunches this week homemade pizza, dough is about 99c, you prob have sauce in the pantry, and a package of cheese (I make pizza a lot at home so when cheese goes on sale at the store I buy 5-6 packages and keep them in the freezer, I also buy a bunch of dough at trader joes and keep it in the freezer, this way you have most of the meal without having to go to the store) Breakfast for dinner, pancake or waffle mix you might have or be able to make with stuff in pantry, or scrambled eggs |
| Harris Teeter is tripling coupons until May 2, I think. The original coupon can be no more than .99, however. I had quite a few .50 coupons that tripled to 1.50 and some .75 that tripled to 2.25. So, I was able to get quite a few things free of charge. |
| I always check the clearance produce rack. I frequently get a whole bag of over ripe bananas for something like a dollar and make banana bread. This lasts all week for breakfasts/snacks. |
Oh, I just meant, I'm temporarily broke, not destitute. My husband certainly wouldn't be eating lunch out, if we had NO money. I could put stuff on credit, or raid our savings -- but I'm trying to stay within the allotted money for the 2 weeks -- and this week I just blew it! But -- just two more days, and it's looking great! I think I'll try this again next week, too. I can't tell you how nice it was to feel like I had some people rooting for me. Licving on a budget and being frugal feels pretty lonely sometimes. You feel like everyone else has money to burn except you. |
