Is the 22-23 Calendar designed to be an f-u to parents?

Hardly any 5 day weeks in the first half of the school year.

I believe they said they had to make the school year a week longer because of the 4 new holidays

Spring break aligns with Easter for two reasons.

#1 is to put it back at the same week as neighboring districts and the private schools. There were LOTS of complaints about this year's spring break from parents and teachers as it did not align with any of the surrounding districts or private schools.

#2 Is that in spring 2023, 3 of the 11 zero learning days happened to fall the week prior to Easter. It just makes sense to have that week as spring break, ince there were only going to be 2 content days that week due to the O days.

Those O days will all be content days now. They changed that rule for next year

I am a working parent and don’t see it as an f u … it’s not like I have the summer off {{shrug}}.

Probably geared more to the HS crowd, TBH

Nope. By mid May AP exams are over. Not a lot happens in many classes after that. And good luck getting seniors to do anything. Plus, the late end date effects summer jobs, internships and programs. No reason not to end school by Memorial Day at the HS level.

Not everyone in HS takes AP classes and still have final exams.

I dont like the calendar either, but hardly any? 7 full weeks in 2022. 10 non-full weeks. thats not good, but i wouldnt list it as hardly any.

Personally I like the breaks in the week. My HS kids need a break some times. School and their course schedule is very demanding and exhausting. Gives them a day or 2 to study without classes and after school activities interrupting.

Actually its 8 full weeks, 9 weeks with at least 1 day off

I like having the days off here and there, and 4 day weeks. Gives the kids a break, allows them to sleep in, etc. As much as I hate January being full of holidays (especially this year), I really despise that stretch with no breaks from the 3rd week of Jan to the 3rd week of Feb. It's bleak.

And it is bleak for kids. Routine is code for slog. Kids.live for and need those breaks.

Same. I'm a working parent and I actually think summers are TOO long. Specially for teenagers and working parents.

What are you talking about?

You don't have teens if you think summer is too long for teens. It is way to short.

Put in one summer program in June-July, and sports practices starting in August, teens often only end up with one or two weeks of unscheduled summer break.

Pathetic.

So much for the public input and all the money they wasted hiring a survey company (and the questions and answer choices were still poorly worded or didn't have a range of choices to select from).
Again, pathetic.

It's even less than that when you count the optional attendance "O" days....sadly

Why do they hire survey companies? None of the employees at the Office of Research and Strategic Initiatives know how to do a simple survey? Why do they exist if FCPS is going to hire consultants every time they need to make a decision?

They love to waste money.

But that really has nothing to do with whether the calendar is better for working parents ….

They could have shortened winter break back down to 10 days or whatever it used to be. We don't need to be out the entire week before Christmas.
