CU grad here. It’s a great school, with strong academics if you want them, and in a beautiful location. Former classmates went on to medical school (one at Harvard), working at the State Department in a very senior role, media industry execs, top 10 law schools. It really is the best of all worlds. |
I was in engineering classes at CU with Michael Wirth who is now the CEO of Chevron.

Another happy CU grad here. Wouldn’t change a single day. Loved it, loved the interesting people I met and was extremely well prepared when I started my career. I look back fondly on my days as a Buff and cross my fingers our junior applies next year! |
Trying to figure out how to afford it now |
DD accepted with merit (2nd tier, like $6500 per year I think). She also received an invite last week for a Scholar program interview. Hasn’t visited but one of her top 10 as it’s a great campus with good biz school. 33 ACT, 3.85 UW, 12 APs, no hooks. |
Another CU grad here that still lives in CO. I had an amazing experience at CU Boulder and I still love Boulder so much, congratulations to the families of those attending! |
It seems to me it might be better for graduate school if you’re a high achieving kid? Our DC got in with a little merit, $6000/year. But that leaves it SO expensive. I can’t see how it will make sense over UMD, which seems like a more competitive, more highly ranked school with more high-stats students. And of course it will cost much less. (Some for UVA if that’s your in-state school.) If our kid gets into any more highly ranked private colleges, their online aid calculators suggest our expected contribution will be comparable to Boulder OOS. I imagine others are in the same boat. Is Boulder still appealing in such a scenario ? |
It is what it is. It’s extremely appealing for many people and fwiw, living in Boulder at the foot of the Rocky Mountains is a heck of a lot more desirable than spending four years living in College Park. To each his own! |
Yeah, tell me about it. I'm from there. However, I feel less and less at home when I go back. People have become pretty superficial and self-centered. It's also very white and homogenous. Even the student body. |
DS in to Exploratory Studies, not Computer Science, with 6500$ merit/year. Disappointed, though from what I read he could still get into Comp Sci before May as people decline.
4.1 wgpa/1450 from FCPS. |
If I may ask -- Did you get any merit aid? What is the net price? I have a kid who might be interested but don't want her to really like it if we can't afford it! |
Congrats all! |
My DS very interested in CU Boulder for next year. For those whose kids got in with less than a 4.0W, can you share stats? Just trying to figure out if 3.6W and 1200 SAT is in the right ball park. |
Depends on which school - top line numbers (for current year) available here: https://www.colorado.edu/bursar/costs/fallspring-costs/undergraduate-nonresident |
OOS tuition is 38K. The best merit scholarship they offer (to very few kids) is 15K. Most strong OOS applicants get 3-7K; the majority of OOS kids get nothing. You're paying a premium at CU for the (fantastic) location, and it doesn't come cheap. If the thought of spending 50 grand a year makes you gulp, don't even look. |
