Will being half-Asian work against my kids in top college acceptances?

NP here and most Indian names have been shortened and can pass for white.

If a name is white enough it passes for African American. What's your objective?

Tell it what it is and you will be at peace. I am sure there will be option for multirace, or you can check both race, or write it down on the “other race” . section…

Yes 'Other Race' which is better than White or Asian

+1

Please don't think that these "woe's me" posters speak for all Asian Americans!

Right? We never gave it a second thought. We are an affluent, educated family with two loving and attentive parents. My kids grew up in a safe neighborhood attending strong public schools and had every kind of advantage we could give them in terms of time, attention, and resources. I’m not spending one second begrudging other kids whatever scraps the universe is willing to throw their way because they have more than enough.

It’s like you’ve never laid eyes on the Common App.

You are totally wrong.

Asians are underrepresented at most SLACs.

So being half Asian didn’t work against my kid in his college admissions, which was the OPs question.

Doesn’t this depend on what box you check and what your name is? If the kid has a Caucasian last name (which is more than likely as white dad / Asian mom is more common than the reverse) and you check the white box, how would they know the kid is half Asian? If you check the Asian box or the multiracial box and have an Asian last name, then I imagine you would be treated as an Asian (ie disadvantaged in admissions).

Most Indian names don’t pass for white.

Well duh. If kid has white dad’s name that’s not an issue.

My half-Indian/half-white DD was going to do white but 1) parts of her application, like supps, had to do with her race and 2) the school she ended up ED’ing to were underrepresented with multiracial kids, so that’s what she put.

Yes, you can. my DCs put White on their applications. College admission is an unnecessarily brutal process, why add more agony?

Not only is it well established that it does work against Asians, schools like Harvard is defending discrimination against Asians in court. It's sad this day and age that there are people like you who think it's funny to support racist discrimination.

This. Why not just check the “Black” box, and claim your kid is a light skinned black person?
