if kid had covid, how do we make sure they aren't PCR tested

Anonymous
Our kids have gotten tested so much (PCR) since school started. Maybe 7 times for one kid; 6 for the other.
Word to the wise - one of those kids is at a red school now. Most of her friends also submitted to testing and look at the pickle we are in.

Patients who have recovered from COVID-19 can continue to have detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in upper respiratory specimens for up to 3 months after illness onset. However, replication-competent virus has not been reliably recovered and infectiousness is unlikely.

Can you find where this preliminary data has changed CDC guidelines? It is not clear that the people who still had detectable RNA were not symptomatic.

I know this seems off-topic, but I think it is relevant for people who may chose to opt-out of testing because of previous infection.

Ok, I found it! "For all others, a test-based strategy is no longer recommended except to discontinue isolation or precautions earlier than would occur under the symptom-based strategy."

Thanks! I’ll definitely opt out of testing for my kid who already had Covid recently.

Well, despite an email chain with the principal and the school nurse, both of whom said they'd take my kid's name off the testing list, my kid was called for random testing today. She tried to explain to her teacher and the person in charge that she wasn't supposed to test since she had tested positive (not at school) 3 weeks ago, but they said if her name was on the list, she needed to test. We'll see what her results are and hope that we can sort it out if she still shows positive.
