Almost. AZ is for kids who can't get into better schools (85% acceptance rate is a safe bet for almost anyone)

Arizona is one of a number of red states (also including Kansas and Iowa) that do a really commendable job of making quality higher education accessible to all who are ready for it. It's precisely the sort of thing that liberals claim to support wholeheartedly...but then look down their noses at any place (excellent R1 institutions obviously included) actually walking the walk. It's exactly this kind of nonsense that's paving the way for Trump's return.

Florida is easily the best for this. With a 3.5 and a 1330/29 SAT/ACT, you get 100% tuition covered.

We visited both and my kid preferred UA over Boulder. Didn’t end up going there, but it was her second choice.

We found marijuana use really rampant (very striking) on our last vacation to CO. Also have a friend (not in DMV) whose child attends CU Boulder (from out of state) and describes their child as a pothead. Obviously, this will not describe everyone - but it's definitely more overtly used and accepted in CO than in most of the DMV.

I haven't been to AZ since they legalized and don't have friends with kids currently there.

Even before legalization, whenever I heard that someone went to CU, i just assumed it was for skiiing or pot (or both!!!!). Is there any other reason to go to CU? I can't think of any.

If that's your view of the world, you need to leave your bubble more often.

Really???? Why else does someone travel 1500+ miles to pay high out-of-state tuition to attend a very average state university? It's either skiing or pot. Or both (getting high after hitting the slopes). That's it.

I'd love to hear how your kid explained their interest, and would love to know whether your kid to tell you their white lie and keep a straight face. LOL

yes. any state school in florida. (only in-state residents, so if you don't live in FL don't get too excited). Georgia HOPE is also excellent- used to live in GA and know many many students who went to UGA or GT on HOPE.

Yeah, the FL / GA model is different than the AZ / KS / IA one--more about keeping the best and brightest in-state than making quality higher ed accessible as widely as plausible--but it's similarly red states walking the blue state talk.

Beautiful location. Great people. Solid academics. Yes, I'm a CU grad. Yes, I'm proud I went there. Yes, I am considered fairly successful in my field. Yes, I know lots of my former classmates who likewise are considered quite accomplished. Yes, you sound like an ignorant fool. Respectfully.

I never said it was a good value out of state. My kids were in-state, and accordingly, it was one of their safeties.

The point is that it is not an entire state flagship filled with pot smokers.

The University of Arizona is supposed to be great for astronomy, and Colorado is a top school for physics and other hard sciences.

U of A is good for a number of STEM fields (not just astronomy) and I think their behavioral economics department is also well regarded. The PP that talked about Instagram models was thinking of ASU, I think—that is historically more of party school.

I don't think that's accurate. CU Boulder is #1 for 1%'ers and AZ is #2 for public schools. (In terms of pure numbers, not %).

Even for OOS students red state flagships tend to be very generous with merit aid.

Off topic, but GT in state is the best college ROI in America. Excellent school, free tuition. I have a family member applying there (fingers crossed!) and, if they get in, their entire 4 years will cost about $70,000.
