What's your "dream" public high school in the area?

Kid #1 is at HBW though and I assume will stay there through high school.

We are also zoned with Wakefield and I am happy with that. Otherwise I think my kid could do really well at Thomas Jefferson, but I am not sure I want that kind of stress for him.

Currently zoned Wakefield and happy with it. Neighbors’ kids have done very well there and have gotten into very good colleges. We’d consider W-L and Arl Tech, but not interested in Yorktown, at all. If our oldest wants to apply to TJ, we’ll consider that, too, but our preference would be that they not attend that particular school. Nobody in our household needs that additional stress or pressure. Lol.

I was about to say Yorktown! I'm interested in your hesitations.

Yorktown or Meridian for us.

It just doesn’t seem like a good fit for our family. Nothing “wrong” with the school, per se, but it’s just not our preference. I know many nice parents and kids who go there and who’ve gone there, and have no qualms about the academics, but I think school culture is unique to each school, and this one doesn’t do it for us. It’s totally personal preference and you might feel differently.

You're too polite. When you concentrate most of the wealthy White kids in the county at Yorktown, but then allow the more motivated ones to apply to HB Woodlawn or transfer to W-L, you end up with a school that has a rich-kid culture but not the academic chops that usually go with it.

TJ. Don’t believe the hype about pressure. It’s mostly parental. Great school. Amazing opportunities. Amazing peer group and accepting peers.

Zoned for Wakefield HS and our kids are v happy and thriving there. But since you're asking about the whole pyramid, I'd find a way to skip Gunston if possible.

You can easily skip Gunston. Students from Kenmore and Jefferson MS also go to Wakefield - but they both split between Wakefield and WL; so you need to know the boundaries....which will be changing.

Wait, what's wrong with Gunston? I started a thread to find out more info on it a while back and got pretty positive responses...?

Also interested in hearing re Gunston as I have a child who wants to continue immersion there next year….

OP, I think you should have asked for opinions -only- from those with students in high school.

What people hear or believe they know, but they have younger kids, isn't very helpful.

I had two kids go through the immersion program at Gunston (the last one is now a senior in HS). No complaints about Gunston. I really liked the administration, and each kid had plenty of good teachers. Both my kids ended up doing well (both were admitted to TJHSST, though one ended up deciding not to go and is doing IB at W-L). I thought that they got to have enough classes with the entire Gunston community so as to be able to get to know lots of "new" kids, but still had their smaller immersion community which gave a sense of a smaller school.

Ah no (see other thread about Channel 7). Actually no where in MCPS unless you want a high-school-as-factory.
