I have a kid at Dayton now.
One end of the campus is close to the hospitals and downtown Dayton, which can be a little sketchy. On the other side of the campus is the city of Oakwood, which has some beautiful houses on treelined streets.
From what I can tell the students mainly stick to campus. The university owns (almost) all of the single family homes on the streets surrounding the campus and that is upper classman student housing. Each house has a front porch and hanging out on the front porches is a big part of the campus culture (they even named the student portal "porches.")

My junior is in one of those houses this year, I'm looking forward to parents weekend to visit!

Engineering is a big program at Dayton and for the PP who asked if it's safe, the poster I've quoted summarizes it perfectly. My son hasn't had any issues and the students tend to stay closer to campus. It's a nice campus, and for our son it was a good size -- not too big, not too small. Plenty to do on weekends.

Merit aid is generous, we're paying equivalent to UMD (our state) costs.

PP you quoted here, and yes same here, we are paying slightly less than what we would have paid for Virginia in state tuition.
My son is a sophomore and can't wait to live in one of the houses next year!

1. This thread is super old.

2. UMD and many of the VA state schools are better than Dayton so if you’re paying the same price it’s still not exactly a bargain

1. So what?
2. According to USNWR the only VA state universities ranked higher than Dayton are UVA, W&M, and Virginia Tech. These are increasingly difficult to get into, and though my kid didn't apply to any of them, I doubt he would have been accepted anyway. So yes, if my kid can go to a place that he really likes for less money than it would cost to send him to Radford or CNU or another state school, then that's what he will do.

1. A couple of questions were asked just today.

2. “Better” is relative. We were more interested in “fit” for our student. Who, after visiting U of Dayton, was excited about the school and said it was the right one for him.

Better than Dayton? What makes them "better?" They are all completely different schools that appeal to different people. Bigger, smaller, whatever.

University of Dayton is a special school. It's not to do with rankings or money or whatever else. It has to do (I think) with a low greek life and I think as a result, a sense of shared community amongst the kids. The kids are so friendly, or at least that was the case when I was there. Met my spouse there, we have lots of family alumni too. It's like coming home to a place you have never been. Those who know, know.

The term “fit” makes me want to vomit.

Ok, but it’s private, Catholic and ranked 133. Why are you bringing up in-state publics that are ranked much higher?

If college "ranking" is your thing, then maybe you shouldn't look at Dayton. Just hope your kid wins the jackpot and gets into the school of your choice so you can brag to your neighbor. For everyone else, UD is worth a look. The campus is beautiful, the students and alums love it, and it is big enough to not feel cramped but small enough so teachers know their students. They also give generous financial aid. As for Dayton itself, have you ever seen where Yale is located or UC's South Side neighborhood?

Flyer alums really do speak highly of their experiences at Dayton.

They really do. And there is a high percentage of multi-generational attendance. It is pretty unusual that there is such loyalty when it comes to colleges.

I think my son would love Dayton. He’s not interested though because we’re in NY and he doesn’t want to go that far away. People seem really happy there and stay connected and remain friends with each other after graduation. Heck, I wish my 18 year old self had gone there!

You might want to talk to a doctor. That sounds like a serious medical condition.

Students love it because they aren’t thrown into a giant university experience. The school has a community feel to it without suffocating them the way a much smaller college might. Our DC loves it.

What's it like for a non-Catholic?

I’ve read that the Miami campus is really nice. Can someone who knows speak to the culture of the place as compared to Dayton, or even UMD?
