Computer Science majors, where are they applying?

Olin College might be a safety

Not sure if I missed Harvey Mudd. It is tough to get in from the East coast but a great school.

No one cares where your kid goes for computer science. The degree is all that matters and the fact they have the skills and ability to do the work and keep up with new technology.

Class of 2024 acceptance rate 15% puts Olin in reach-for-all territory.

Since OP is applying to top 10 - they must be competitive for <5% admit rate. In this case, Pitt might be a good choice as a safety.

Pittsburgh is a fast-rising destination for startups particularly AI/ML and robotics: Uber and Waymo are there and CMU draws in multiple others. Possibly good for internships. And that's what you hope from a top 10: better access to internship opportunities.

This.

It is a growing field which is not going away. If DC does well, and get the degree from almost anywhere, there will be lots of opportunities.

Good luck.

Yeah if your kid is going to end up working for a contractor with a federal project no one will care. DH has a masters in CS from GMU. All anyone cares is how well he can code and in what languages. As long as you pass the coding test during the interview, don't seem like too much of a jerk and can pass DoD or Homeland security clearance you're good.

They care more about the background checks than the college. So many people can't pass a background check.

Waterloo is really hard to get into. They like you to have sat their math competition as well.

If DS does not get in one of his 5 schools in EA/ED, he will need to apply to a lot of schools.

How does that work? Most EA decisions are after the RD deadline.... so would you know in time?

My kid applied to Rochester/UMass/UMD (we are from MD) as safeties to top rated CS schools. In the end, only UMD offered enough merit aid to make him consider turning down a top ranked school.

Lehigh is $60k per year. In what world is any school with that cost a good ROI?

Anonymous wrote:WashU of course. With all the 65% return in endowment and massive $$$ they'll be stealing star professors from Stanford, MIT, and Caltech in no time and the CS department will jump from #49 to #9 in no time. All the brightest kids are heading to STL now AS A FACT.

#49? That’s a local boot camp level. Come back after it hits #20. That’s what separates the men from the boys.

No, they won't hear from the EA schools in time. ED schools announce in December.

If staying close to home and want to keep the cost around 40k or less, with merit, look at Pitt, U Del, UMBC and NC State. If in Virginia, check out UVA and W and M. We did this last year and went ED to VT, as wanted costs less than 30K.

NP. It depends on the schools - EA timelines vary widely. Many arrive in Dec, though there are several that arrive after RD is due.
