Cue the busing crank!

I think I am confused about the MS boundaries - page 6.

It seems like the surrounding area of each MS is being sent to the other MS.

Forest Oak MS is in the middle of the orange area, but the orange area is zoned for GMS.
GMS is in the green area, but the surrounding area is zoned for Forest Oak MS.

Am I reading that map right? If I am, that is super crazy, and I now agree with the anti-busing crowd.

Well, this really has nothing to do with busing, because both of these middle schools are in each other's walk zones. This is just the weirdness of having built two middle schools a mile apart from each other. And the neighborhoods around both schools can walk to either school.

Also, this is actually an improvement on the existing FOMS boundaries, because the new ES area will be zoned there:

https://gis.mcpsmd.org/ServiceAreaMaps/ForestOakMS.pdf

It is crazy to have the neighborhood literally right across the street from the MS walk or ride the bus to the other MS. That is so dumb.

Top of sk2 area has to walk by FO to get to GMS.

This is really absurd. I had defended MCPS/BOE on the previous boundary decisions, but this is stupid and crazy. And I'm starting to agree with the anti-busing people.

The FAA policy that MCPS sneakily passed is allowing for this type of nonsense to happen. Even the previous Superintendent said that passing the policy will have significant effects.

No, because the boundaries were like this long before that policy was passed.

Except, currently, the GMS boundary makes more sense. The neighborhoods around GMS are zoned for GMS.

https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/currentyear/schools/04551map.pdf

The new proposed boundary for the MSs have the neighborhood right around GMS going to Forest Oak. That.Is.Insane.

Like I said, I defended MCPS/BOE before, but not anymore. If they pass this, I totally agree with the anti-busers.

Do you live in the Gaithersburg cluster? Did you attend any of the 13 community meetings about this study? Did you testify at the CIP public hearings over the past few weeks, suggesting an alternative option be chosen?

Would it have made a difference? Did all those people who testified say they wanted this crazy boundary?

No, it would not have made a difference. It never does. MCPS only listens to who they WANT to listen to.

The Gaithersburg mayor testified in strong support of this option and even said the 20-year-old current MS boundaries have long been a sore point for many in the community, and that these new boundaries are a big improvement.

Interesting. How so?

Because the Saybrooke and Kelley Park neighborhoods weren't zoned for Forest Oak and now they will be, and that will reduce the bus service there.

It’s not that the kids are being split up it’s that the entire neighborhood around Forest Oak MS goes to Gaithersburg MS, and the entire neighborhood around Gaithersburg MS goes to Forest Oak MS. The schools are close enough to each other that they overlap walk zones, but it’s still odd that you wouldn’t walk to the closer MS.

Maybe if they were to do it that way, the FARMS rate between the 2 middle schools would be off-balanced.
This. It's busing.

That's not very likely, since this option reduces busing.

Option 4 recommended:

To Gaithersburg Elementary School #8
• Reassign Zones GA1b, GA2, GA3, GA4, and GA5 from Gaithersburg Elementary School
• Reassign Zones R3, R5, R6, and R7 from Rosemont Elementary School
• Reassign Zone W2 from Washington Grove Elementary School

To Gaithersburg Elementary School
• Reassign Zones SK2 and SK3 from Strawberry Knoll Elementary School

To Rosemont Elementary School
• Reassign SU2, SU3, SU4, and SU5 from Summit Hall Elementary School

To Washington Grove Elementary School
• Reassign Zones R2, R4, and R9 from Rosemont Elementary School

To Forest Oak Middle School
• Assign Gaithersburg Elementary School #8

To Gaithersburg Middle School
• Reassign Washington Grove Elementary School from Forest Oak Middle School

The boundary for rosemont looks so wacky. I wonder if it’s going to crown high school entirely or just a part of it

I think Rosemont will end up split-articulated for high school, because the parts east of 270 can walk to GHS and the part west of 270 can walk to Crown.

but how does it make any sense for the neighborhood that is literally across the street from the MS to be zoned for the other MS. This is nuts.

Because

1. both middle schools are in the walk zone
2. there are 3 other factors to consider in boundary studies

What you wrote doesn't answer the question of "how does it make any sense for the neighborhood that is literally across the street from the MS to be zoned for the other MS?"

I'm not referring to the entire boundary. I'm referring to those specific neighborhoods literally right across the street from the MS being zoned for the other MS. Those kids could walk across the street to the MS that they are NOT assigned for. That part is really really stupid. Makes zero sense.

If you look at the satellite view of Forest Oak MS, it's easy to see how the new boundaries are an improvement: the school is surrounded on three sides by forested areas. There are no kids "across the street," but there are houses along Saybrooke Oaks Blvd which are currently zoned for Gaithersburg MS, but in the new boundaries are rezoned to Forest Oak, just a short walk away. These are zones Ga3 and Ga5 on the map.

It's also misleading that they have drawn the shape of the SK2 zone to include Forest Oak itself. They should have extended the Ga5 shape to include the Forest Oak site, because that neighborhood is right next to the school. Nobody lives in the eastern two-thirds of SK2.

The neighborhood that is directly south of FOMS now has about a 30min walk to GMS whereas it would take them 5min to walk to FOMS.

Same for neighborhoods surrounding GMS.

That makes zero sense to make those neighborhoods walk 30min away to a different MS, when they could literally walk across the street to their closest MS.

You are making yourself sound dumb by trying to make this part of the boundary appear to be "better".

There are unfortunately boundaries that do not many any sense, and usually, those are the ones that impact a high number of FARMS students. Look at the boundaries for Neelsville MS. There is not a single walker to that school. NOT ONE.

PP here.. you know, I had defended the upcounty boundary, but now I agree with those of you who fought against it. MCPS boundary decisions are becoming more and more bizarre.
