It's one of a handful of state flagship safeties that look good enough and that your kid can attend if you can afford it. To me, it's the mirror of Alabama- a school that smart kids go because it's free and they can't afford better.

NO it is not a "mirror of Alabama"

Not even close. Alabama LOL

One is a flagship that will take OOS rich kids and use that to boost their bottom line. One is a flagship that will take OOS smart kids to boost their class profiles. You go to Colorado when you have money but not scores and you go to Alabama if you have scores but not money.

You mean like Michigan

Which is Michigan? For scores but no money? or opposite?

For Michigan you need scores and money. Once you drop a tier or two, there are places that are cheap with scores or expensive, but don't care as much about scores.

Just like CU Boulder

Boulder is a much better place than Tuscaloosa.

My senior has looked at both and strongly prefers Tuscaloosa/Alabama. My husband took my senior to Boulder last weekend to visit and described the city as "Berkley with money" (he grew up in the bay area and that description is not meant to be a compliment.)

Depends on what you like whether or not it is a compliment, but as someone who has spent time in both berkeley and boulder, that is a pretty good description. It also is more suburban feeling than Berkeley, almost felt like a midwest mid-size city in terms of stores commerce. The weather is really good, not a serious winter but with mountains.

The school is pretty well known in engineering, especially aerospace, but I don't know about "prestigious".

The 80% acceptance rate suggests otherwise

CU Boulder doesn't give much merit aid and housing is very limited and expensive in Boulder. Around the Denver area though, it is seen as a prestigious degree, especially in STEM and business. If you want to access the job market in the area following graduation, CU is a good place to be from.

University of Denver will give a lot more merit aid than CU Boulder but the vibe is completely different and the school is smaller. CSU in Fort Collins is considerably cheaper for out of state students for both tuition and housing.

Don’t disagree that you identified similar schools. But UC Boulder is significantly more well known and prestigious across the county. Just for perspective of what you are getting.

I'll give you that more people have heard of CU Boulder (even if they identify it as "UC Boulder"). They mostly associate it with woke stoners. That's not prestige.

+1
"Prestigious"? No.
